  • Hybird work with city fringe main office
  • Architecture-development hybrid in Databricks
  • Consultancy opening
We're partnering with a leading specialist consultancy that's helping some of New Zealand's largest organisations unlock greater value from their data through modern Integration, Data, AI and Cloud solutions.

As their Data Practice continues to grow, they're looking for an experienced Data Archi-Dev who combines architecture thinking with deep engineering capability.

This isn't a traditional Data Architect role focused on governance or strategy.
Instead, we're looking for someone who can provide technical oversight and architectural direction while remaining hands-on with Azure Databricks engineering, coding, pipeline development and delivery.

If you're someone who still enjoys cutting code, solving technical problems and leading from within the implementation, this could be the perfect fit.

About the role
Working across a range of enterprise client engagements, you'll design, build and optimise modern cloud data platforms using Azure Databricks and Microsoft technologies.

You'll lead technical discussions with clients, shape solution design and mentor engineers, while staying close to the implementation—owning engineering outcomes and contributing directly to delivery.

You'll be responsible for:
  • Designing, building and optimising modern Azure Databricks data platforms.
  • Providing technical oversight and architectural direction across client engagements.
  • Remaining hands-on with Azure Databricks engineering, coding, pipeline development and delivery.
  • Building production-grade data pipelines using PySpark, Spark SQL, Delta Live Tables and Lakeflow.
  • Developing scalable Lakehouse solutions using Medallion Architecture, Unity Catalog and Delta Lake.
  • Implementing testing, monitoring, CI/CD and data quality frameworks.
  • Leading technical workshops and translating business requirements into practical engineering solutions.
  • Collaborating closely with architects, consultants and delivery teams to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Mentoring engineers and contributing to engineering standards, reusable frameworks and best practices.
  • Supporting solution shaping, estimation and pre-sales activities where required.
About you
You're a senior Databricks engineer who naturally thinks like an architect.

You enjoy influencing technical direction but don't want to move away from the technology. You want to stay close to the implementation detail, solving engineering problems, building production solutions and leading by example.

You'll bring:
  • 6+ years' experience delivering modern cloud data platforms.
  • 4+ years of recent, hands-on Azure Databricks engineering experience.
  • Strong Python, PySpark and SQL development skills.
  • Proven experience designing and building production data pipelines.
  • Experience with Delta Live Tables (DLT), Lakeflow, notebooks, workflows and Databricks Asset Bundles.
  • Strong knowledge of Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, Medallion Architecture and scalable Lakehouse design.
  • Experience with Azure Data Platform technologies and exposure to Microsoft Fabric.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD, DevOps practices, testing and data quality frameworks.
  • The ability to balance architecture oversight with hands-on engineering and implementation.
  • Strong consulting, stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership within delivery teams.
  • Databricks certifications, or a commitment to ongoing professional development, will be highly regarded.
If you're looking for a role where you can architect, build and lead without stepping away from the code, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply today via the prompts and Paula Rae Broussard (paula@momentum.co.nz) will be in touch.

Please note: Applicants must currently be based in New Zealand and hold valid New Zealand working rights.
