We are looking for an experienced industrial and employee relations specialist with a healthy dose of pragmatism, exceptional relationship-building skills, and strong employment law expertise to join the HR team at Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT), based in the heart of Napier. This is an outstanding opportunity to step into a pivotal advisory role where you will be the trusted expert for all things ER and IR, partnering closely with leaders across the organisation to navigate complex people matters with confidence and care.
EIT is a highly regarded tertiary education provider serving approximately 11,000 learners annually and employing around 600 academic and professional staff. With campuses in Hawke’s Bay (Napier), Gisborne and five regional learning learning centres, they proudly serve the regions and communities of Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti; providing foundation level courses right through to Masters degrees. Their reach also goes well beyond the East Coast region; offering an international postgraduate campus in Auckland, and offshore relationships in China and the Cook Islands, reflecting the diversity and growth mindset of this independent institute of technology.
Reporting to the new Director People and Organisational Effectiveness, you will quickly become the trusted subject matter expert for ER and IR across the business. Mitigating risk, safeguarding the organisation, and embedding best-practice people processes to drive both compliance and positive workplace outcomes will be a key focus. You will lead and support managers through complex ER matters, including disciplinary processes, performance management, grievances, investigations, restructures, and employment disputes. Industrial relations advice, supporting the interpretation and application collective agreements, employment contracts, and legislative obligations, and managing union engagement and consultation processes will sit with you. You’ll also contribute to strategic workforce initiatives by identifying emerging people risks and recommending practical solutions that balance business needs with employee experience.
To be successful, you will bring deep and proven experience in both ER and IR in complex environments, ideally within large or multi-site organisations. You will enjoy guiding people through a range of situations and will be known for your ability to execute at pace with diplomacy, discretion, sound judgement, and a people-centred style. A relevant tertiary qualification is essential, while additional qualifications in employment law will be highly valued. Competitive remuneration will reflect your experience.
