Apply directInternational specialist electronics business | Founder transition
We are retained to appoint the next Chief Executive Officer of an established Hong Kong-based company that develops and supplies specialist electronic products to international markets.
This SME sells primarily through a global network of distributors, serving institutional and consumer applications in a quality-sensitive specialist sector. The company has an established product portfolio, proprietary technical know-how, long-standing channel relationships and an experienced team.
The founder is preparing to retire. This appointment is therefore both a leadership succession and a business transformation mandate. The incoming CEO will take full executive responsibility, manage an orderly transfer of founder-held knowledge and relationships, and prepare the company for its next stage of sustainable international growth.
The role
Reporting to the Board, the CEO will assume end-to-end responsibility for the profit and loss account, strategy, people, commercial performance, products and operations.
The immediate priority will be to maintain continuity and confidence throughout the founder transition. This will require a disciplined handover of key customer and distributor relationships, technical and market knowledge, operating responsibilities and decision rights.
Beyond the transition, the CEO will assess where the company can compete and grow most effectively. They will sharpen the commercial plan, strengthen the management of international distributors and focus resources on the markets, partners and products with the best potential. They will also improve forecasting, management information and accountability while keeping systems and processes proportionate to an SME.
The CEO will work closely with commercial and technical colleagues to guide the product roadmap. The successful candidate does not need to be an engineer, but must understand technical products well enough to ask incisive questions, contribute to development priorities and engage credibly in technical discussions with customers and channel partners.
This is a hands-on role. The appointee must be willing to move between Board discussions and operating detail, including distributor reviews, key account conversations, pricing and margin decisions, product trade-offs, team development and delivery issues. It will not suit someone who relies on the infrastructure or functional depth of a large multinational.
Candidate profile
Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
- General management or business-unit leadership with meaningful profit-and-loss accountability.
- Success managing and developing international distributors, dealers or channel partners across multiple markets.
- Strong people leadership and the ability to guide an organisation through succession, transformation or another period of material change.
- Experience with technical, engineered or electronic products. An engineering qualification is not required, but technical curiosity and product judgement are essential.
- Sound commercial judgement across sales, pricing, margin, product portfolio and market-development decisions.
- The ability to turn strategy into execution in a resource-conscious SME environment.
- Credibility across cultures both internally and externally.
- The ability and commitment to be based in Hong Kong.
Exposure to product development, outsourced manufacturing or supply chains in Asia would be advantageous.
The strongest candidates are likely to combine commercial drive with practical operating discipline. They will be direct, low-ego and technically curious. They must be able to respect the company’s history while making clear decisions about what should change.
Why consider the opportunity?
This is a genuine CEO mandate with the opportunity to shape an established international business at an important point in its development. The incoming leader will inherit a credible platform rather than a turnaround situation, but will have meaningful scope to strengthen the organisation, improve channel performance and set the direction for the post-founder era.
