Principal Financial Accountant

About the Opportunity
We are partnering with a large Queensland Government organisation to appoint an experienced Principal Financial Accountant to its Brisbane CBD finance team.

This is a hands-on senior accounting position with a broad remit across financial accounting operations. You’ll lead key activities spanning month-end, financial ledgers, annual financial statements and asset accounting, while providing technical advice and supporting strong financial governance across the organisation.

The position will suit someone who is comfortable taking ownership of complex accounting matters, working across multiple priorities and building strong relationships with senior stakeholders.

What you’ll be responsible for:

• Lead financial ledger operations and coordinate key month-end accounting activities
• Provide timely, high-level financial accounting advice to internal and external stakeholders
• Play a key role in the preparation of annual financial statements and coordinate associated activities with auditors
• Oversee asset accounting activities, including asset registers, stocktakes, valuations, impairment and useful life reviews
• Analyse financial information and performance to support decision-making and key financial initiatives
• Prepare formal and ad hoc financial and management reporting for senior stakeholders
• Develop and strengthen financial policies, procedures and internal control frameworks
• Support compliance with statutory requirements, government policy and contemporary financial management practices
• Lead financial management projects and ensure agreed outcomes are delivered within required timeframes
• Provide leadership and guidance across financial accounting activities while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement 

What you’ll bring
You’ll be an experienced financial accounting professional with the technical capability and confidence to operate at a senior level within a complex environment.

Ideally, you’ll bring:

• Extensive experience across financial accounting and financial management
• Strong capability across month-end, financial reporting and complex accounting matters
• Sound knowledge of financial governance, compliance and internal controls
• Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
• The ability to communicate complex financial matters clearly to a range of stakeholders
• Proven experience providing leadership and direction within a finance environment
• A degree in Accounting, Commerce or a related discipline, with CPA, CA or equivalent qualifications highly regarded

• Full-time fixed-term contract through to March 2027
