Responsibilities

As an Associate Ecologist, you will take on a leadership role within our client's team, managing projects, mentoring junior staff, and driving business growth. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and managing ecological project work across various sectors and project types.
  • Overseeing ecological workstreams, from survey design and technical assessments to reporting, mitigation, and implementation.
  • Preparing and reviewing technical reports, including Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) and environmental statement chapters.
  • Providing expert advice to clients on ecological constraints, mitigation strategies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Supporting the preparation of tenders, proposals, and fee estimates.
  • Identifying and developing new business opportunities and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Mentoring and guiding junior ecologists, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Promoting a positive, safe, and collaborative team culture.
  • Contributing to best practices, innovation, and technical development within the ecology discipline.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Strong experience in UK ecological consultancy.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of UK habitats, protected species, and ecological survey requirements.
  • Current or previous protected species survey and/or mitigation licences.
  • Proven ability to design survey programmes and develop practical mitigation strategies.
  • Experience preparing Ecological Impact Assessments and robust technical reports.
  • Knowledge and experience of Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA).
  • Strong project management skills, including technical, commercial, and financial oversight.
  • Experience supporting bids, tenders, or work-winning activities.
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to leadership.
  • A genuine passion for mentoring and developing junior ecologists.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with commercial clients in residential, mixed-use, industrial, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Previous experience at Principal level or above, with readiness to step into Associate-level responsibilities.
  • Strong regional network within the Midlands ecology, planning, or development market.
  • Experience supervising mitigation works on-site.
  • Membership of CIEEM or working towards chartership.
