Embankment Group is proud to partner with a well-established environmental consultancy in their search for a Principal Ecologist to join their expanding ecology team in the south of England. Renowned for delivering clear and pragmatic ecological advice, this consultancy works across a diverse range of development and environmental projects, collaborating closely with planners, landscape architects, and heritage specialists.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced ecologist to take on a leadership role, contributing to high-quality ecological input across various project stages, mentoring junior team members, and playing a key role in the continued growth of the ecology team.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Ecologist, you will:

  • Coordinate ecological inputs across a variety of development and environmental projects.
  • Lead protected species surveys and support the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare and review ecological reports, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs), and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments.
  • Provide expert ecological advice to clients, project teams, and planning authorities.
  • Support ecological input during concept design and planning stages.
  • Mentor and develop junior ecologists within the team.
  • Deliver practical, high-quality ecological advice that balances development needs with biodiversity outcomes.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical foundation and a practical approach to problem-solving.

Essential:

  • A degree in ecology, biology, or a related environmental discipline.
  • Proven experience conducting habitat and protected species surveys, including UKHab.
  • Strong knowledge of wildlife legislation and planning policy.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing ecological reports such as PEAs and EcIAs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and GIS software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to undertake field surveys as required.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (ACIEEM or above, or working towards).

Desirable:

  • A technical specialism, such as botany or ornithology.
  • Protected species survey licences.
  • Experience supporting European Protected Species (EPS) licence applications.
  • Additional ecological accreditations or specialist survey experience.

Day-to-Day

Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and conducting ecological surveys and assessments.
  • Collaborating with project teams to integrate biodiversity considerations into design and planning.
  • Reviewing and finalizing technical reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations.
  • Engaging with clients and stakeholders to provide expert ecological advice.
  • Mentoring junior team members, providing guidance and support for their professional development.
  • Managing multiple projects and ensuring timely delivery of high-quality outputs.
