Job Description:
Position Summary
The Software Engineer III is a senior-level engineering position responsible for the design, development, integration, debugging, and verification of embedded software used in advanced commercial aircraft avionics and cockpit control systems.
This position works closely with electrical, systems, test, and manufacturing engineering teams to develop reliable, safety-critical software solutions from initial concept through production release. The Software Engineer III will also provide technical guidance to junior engineers and contribute to software architecture, design reviews, troubleshooting, and continuous product improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, debug, and maintain embedded software for avionics equipment and aircraft control systems.
- Develop software using C/C++, assembly language, and other embedded programming technologies.
- Participate in requirements analysis, software architecture, detailed design, coding, integration, and verification.
- Develop and maintain software for microprocessors, microcontrollers, DSPs, and embedded control platforms.
- Analyze system and software requirements and translate them into reliable technical solutions.
- Perform software and hardware integration testing.
- Troubleshoot complex interactions between embedded software, electronics, processors, communication buses, and peripheral devices.
- Develop prototypes and proof-of-concept solutions for new avionics products and enhancements.
- Participate in software verification activities for both personally developed software and software developed by other engineers.
- Conduct peer reviews, code reviews, design reviews, and technical documentation reviews.
- Investigate software defects, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions.
- Optimize embedded software for reliability, memory utilization, execution speed, and overall system performance.
- Work closely with hardware engineers to resolve board-level and system-level technical issues.
- Support engineering testing, qualification testing, manufacturing, and production troubleshooting.
- Maintain software documentation, specifications, test procedures, revision records, and engineering reports.
- Assist with software configuration management and version-control processes.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to Software Engineer I and II team members.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives involving software development and verification processes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Typically 5+ years of professional embedded software development experience, preferably in aerospace, avionics, defense, electronics, or another highly regulated industry.
- Strong programming experience with C and C++.
- Experience with embedded systems and real-time software development.
- Experience programming and debugging microprocessors or microcontrollers.
- Working knowledge of assembly language programming.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle principles.
- Experience troubleshooting both software and hardware-related issues.
- Knowledge of software verification, debugging, testing, and root-cause analysis.
- Experience using source-code control and software configuration-management tools.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to read electrical schematics, technical drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience developing commercial aviation or avionics software.
- Knowledge of DO-178 software-development principles or other aerospace software-development standards.
- Experience with Digital Signal Processing (DSP).
- Familiarity with Audio CODECs and embedded audio systems.
- Experience with aircraft communication protocols such as ARINC 429, CAN, RS-232/422/485, or similar communication interfaces.
- Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS).
- Familiarity with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, emulators, and other electronic test equipment.
- Previous experience working with safety-critical or mission-critical embedded systems.
