Legal Counsel, Institutional

PQE Partners are working with a highly regarded institutional organisation looking to appoint an experienced banking and finance lawyer to its Sydney legal team.

The role sits within a sophisticated legal function supporting complex, high-value financing and investment transactions, with significant exposure to cross-border matters, major infrastructure and project financing.

This is an initial 6-month fixed-term contract, with the potential for the role to transition to permanent.

Working closely with senior lawyers and stakeholders across the organisation, you will:

• Advise on corporate, project and infrastructure financing transactions.
• Draft, negotiate and advise on loans, guarantees, bonds and other financing documentation.
• Support complex cross-border transactions and investments.
• Advise on the legal aspects of transactions from structuring and negotiation through to execution and ongoing management.
• Work closely with senior internal stakeholders, counterparties and leading external law firms.
• Support new products, structured transactions and risk transfer arrangements.
• Provide pragmatic and commercially focused legal advice across a broad institutional finance remit.

You will be a qualified lawyer with a strong banking and finance background gained within a leading or mid-tier law firm, financial institution or other sophisticated in-house environment.

Ideally, you will bring:

• Approximately 5–8+ years’ PQE in banking and finance.
• Experience across corporate, project, infrastructure, asset or acquisition finance.
• Project and infrastructure finance experience would be particularly relevant.
• Strong transactional and drafting skills.
• Experience working on complex or cross-border transactions would be advantageous.
• Strong commercial judgement and the confidence to work directly with senior stakeholders.
• The ability to manage transactions autonomously while working collaboratively within an experienced legal team.

The breadth and scale of the organisation’s mandate makes this a particularly interesting opportunity for a banking and finance lawyer looking for exposure beyond a traditional financing role. The work spans significant domestic and international transactions, with exposure to infrastructure, investment and strategically important projects.

The opportunity could suit a private practice lawyer looking to make their first move in-house, or an experienced in-house lawyer seeking a broader and more complex transactional remit.
