Davidson is the proud recruitment partner of SEC Victoria as they accelerate Victoria’s renewable energy transition.

Do work that makes a difference

SEC is building an enterprising and dynamic team to accelerate Victoria’s transition to renewables and help achieve Victoria’s renewable energy target of 95% by 2035. We are working together for renewable, affordable, reliable energy for all Victorians.

We have an exciting and ambitious road ahead with a focus on:

  • Investing in renewable energy and storage projects that accelerate the transition and deliver commercial returns.
  • Supporting households to go electric to reduce their emissions and energy bills.
  • Retailing electricity to Victorian Government operations and Victorian businesses to help them decarbonise.
  • Underpinning all of this is SEC’s work to support the renewable energy workforce our energy transition requires.

SEC is partnering with industry to transform the energy sector, opening the state up for further innovation and investments in renewables. This includes an initial $1 billion towards delivering 4.5 gigawatts of power through renewable energy and storage projects – the equivalent replacement capacity of coal-fired power station Loy Yang A, which is set to close in 2035.

Your role
As Legal Counsel at SEC, you’ll provide strategic legal and regulatory advice across our growing energy business, with a strong focus on wholesale, retail and trading activities. Partnering closely with stakeholders across the organisation, you will draft, negotiate and manage key commercial agreements, support innovative customer and renewable energy initiatives, and help identify and manage legal risk to enable SEC’s commercial objectives.

We’re seeking an Australian-qualified lawyer with at least four years’ experience and a strong background in the energy sector. You’ll bring excellent drafting, negotiation and stakeholder management skills, with experience advising on commercial energy arrangements. Knowledge of renewable energy, PPAs, distributed energy, VPPs or energy regulation will be highly regarded. Just as importantly, you are collaborative, commercially minded and curious, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace and embracing innovation, including the use of AI-enabled tools to enhance legal service delivery.

This role can be based in either our Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.

What you will do:
Core accountabilities include:

  • Legal advice – Provide expert and commercially astute legal and strategic advice on legal and regulatory issues affecting the SEC, primarily in connection with its retail, wholesale and trading activities, but extending across its investment, consumer and corporate activities when needed.
  • Key agreements and contracts – Work closely with internal stakeholders across SEC to lead the drafting, review and negotiation of key agreements in connection with SEC’s wholesale and retail activities. This includes behind-the-meter innovation, financial products, offtakes and retail arrangements.
  • Managing Legal Risk – Proactively identify and manage legal risks to enable SEC to pursue its commercial objectives as well as meet its legal and regulatory obligations.
  • Stakeholder engagement – Liaise between executives and other team members, external professional advisers and external stakeholders, to lead the effective and efficient delivery of legal services to the business.
  • Matter Management & Capability – Effective management of external legal services and legal procurement, in-house matter management, knowledge management, and capability building across the internal legal team and the broader SEC business.
