About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Functional Consultant – Industrial Historian to join a major IT/OT separation and system migration program within the gas and energy utilities sector.
You will act as the functional lead for industrial historian migration activities, working across internal IT/OT teams, SCADA engineers, operations, external transition partners and system integrators.
The role will focus on the migration, lift-and-shift, re-platforming and functional validation of industrial historian environments into a new standalone environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead functional activities across industrial historian migration and separation initiatives.
- Analyse and document current-state historian environments, including tag structures, naming conventions, AF models, interfaces, SCADA/PLC/DCS data sources and downstream consumers.
- Collaborate with technical teams to define target-state historian architecture aligned with enterprise architecture and OT cyber standards.
- Support data extraction, tag migration, interface re-pointing, validation and cutover activities.
- Work closely with SCADA and OT teams to maintain historian continuity during control-room and telemetry transitions.
- Validate data accuracy following migration, including sampling rates, compression, exception rules and tag quality.
- Support integrations with enterprise platforms including SAP/Maximo, GIS, work management, reporting and analytics systems.
- Provide functional guidance around historian security, access controls and audit requirements.
- Develop test plans, UAT scripts and operational acceptance criteria.
- Engage with operations, engineering and compliance stakeholders to ensure historian data meets business and regulatory requirements.
- Produce technical and functional documentation and support knowledge transfer and handover to BAU teams.
About You
You will bring:
- 7+ years' experience working with industrial data historians, ideally within gas, energy, utilities or mining.
- Strong functional expertise in at least one major historian platform, preferably OSIsoft/AVEVA PI System, or alternatively AspenTech IP.21, Wonderware Historian or GE Proficy Historian.
- Experience with OT data acquisition protocols such as OPC DA/UA, Modbus, DNP3 or MQTT.
- Strong understanding of historian tag architecture, compression rules, data quality and event frames.
- Previous experience supporting historian migration, consolidation or environment separation projects.
- Understanding of OT cybersecurity requirements and secure data flows.
- Knowledge of gas distribution, transmission, pipelines or mining operations.
- Understanding of operational telemetry, compressor/pipeline data, alarms and regulatory reporting.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills across IT, OT, engineering and operations.
- Ability to translate complex historian concepts into clear business language.
- Excellent documentation, communication and problem-solving skills.
Desirable Experience
- PI AF, PI Vision, PI Interfaces or PI Integrators.
- Cloud-based historian deployments across Azure or AWS.
- Transitional Service Agreements/Environments (TSA).
- Utilities regulatory compliance and operational reporting.
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, control narratives and instrumentation diagrams.
What Success Looks Like
- Historian migration completed with zero data loss and minimal operational disruption.
- All interfaces successfully re-pointed and validated.
- Historian data is accurate, reliable and fit for operational use.
- Internal teams are trained and able to operate the new environment independently.
- Enterprise-standard documentation and knowledge transfer are completed.
- Smooth transition from the legacy environment to the new standalone platform.
