Job Summary
JMH is seeking experienced Civil Construction Superintendents to provide field leadership across complex civil and infrastructure projects throughout California. With two openings available, one position will primarily support projects in the San Diego market, while the second will be based around Long Beach / Los Angeles with responsibility for projects that may extend throughout California.
This role is responsible for maintaining a high-level view across multiple active projects while coordinating field teams, equipment, subcontractors, schedules, safety, quality, and customer expectations. The ideal candidate is a proven heavy civil leader with experience across earthwork, grading, underground utilities, concrete, asphalt, roadway, and site infrastructure who can effectively delegate, mentor field leaders, and take ownership of project performance.

The Superintendent may oversee resources across as many as five active projects while coordinating manpower and equipment and providing leadership and mentorship to Foremen.
Key Responsibilities
Field Operations & Project Execution
- Oversee multiple active civil construction projects while maintaining visibility into schedule, budget, safety, quality, and project dependencies.
- Manage civil scopes including earthwork, grading, underground utilities, concrete, asphalt, paving, roadway, and site infrastructure.
- Coordinate Project Managers, Foremen, field crews, subcontractors, suppliers, and customers.
- Allocate labor, equipment, and resources across multiple projects.
- Coordinate material deliveries, inspections, survey activities, testing, and project sequencing.
Planning & Scheduling
- Develop and maintain master schedules, project milestones, and two-week look-ahead plans.
- Track production quantities, man-hours, equipment utilization, and overall job progress.
- Identify potential schedule conflicts and project risks before they impact performance.
- Develop and implement recovery plans when projects fall behind schedule.
- Coordinate upcoming project phases to ensure crews, equipment, and materials are prepared.
Project & Field Management
- Review civil plans, specifications, permits, contracts, RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
- Maintain accurate field documentation and support project closeout requirements.
- Monitor field performance while minimizing downtime and avoidable rework.
- Maintain strong customer relationships through site walks, progress meetings, and proactive communication.
- Support punch-list completion and successful project closeout.
Leadership & Safety
- Mentor and develop Foremen and other field leaders.
- Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and mutual respect.
- Reinforce company safety expectations and project-specific safety plans.
- Delegate effectively while maintaining accountability for project results.
- Serve as a trusted field leader for employees, customers, and project stakeholders.
Qualifications
Industry Experience
- Previous Superintendent-level experience or substantial senior field leadership experience within civil construction.
- Strong heavy civil construction background.
- Experience overseeing multiple projects, crews, equipment, and subcontractors.

Location & Travel
San Diego Position
- Primarily supports projects throughout the San Diego area.
- Strong onsite presence required.
- Limited overnight travel anticipated depending on project needs.
Long Beach / Los Angeles Position
- Based around Long Beach or the greater Los Angeles area.
- May oversee projects extending from San Diego through the San Francisco region.
- Must be comfortable managing a broad California territory and traveling based on project demands.
Both positions are field-based and require regular onsite presence.
