About the Company
Our client is a nationally recognised leader in the Australian construction industry with a reputation for delivering complex, large-scale projects across the health, education, defence, and commercial sectors. With a strong forward pipeline of secured health work and a culture that genuinely invests in its people, this is an opportunity to join a builder that consistently sets the benchmark for design and delivery excellence.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Design Manager to join the Melbourne team and take ownership of design coordination across health projects, ranging from hospital redevelopments and acute care facilities to specialist medical builds. This is a mid-level appointment offering significant scope, autonomy, and a clear pathway to senior leadership for the right person.
You will work closely with project teams, consultants, subcontractors, and end-user stakeholders to drive design outcomes that meet clinical, operational, and commercial requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Managing the design process from tender through to construction completion, coordinating architectural, structural, services, and specialist health consultants, and ensuring designs are buildable, compliant, and aligned with project budget and programme.
Reviewing and assessing documentation for completeness, constructability, and value engineering opportunities.
Liaising with health authorities, end users, and clinical stakeholders to translate operational briefs into deliverable design solutions.
Managing design risk, change control, and consultant performance. Supporting tender submissions and early contractor involvement (ECI) phases.
What We're Looking For
The successful candidate will bring demonstrable head contractor experience in a Design Manager or Senior Design Coordinator capacity, ideally with exposure to Australian health sector projects (VHBA familiarity highly regarded).
A tertiary qualification in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline is expected, alongside strong technical knowledge of health-specific requirements including infection control, medical services, and clinical planning.
You will need excellent stakeholder management skills, the ability to influence consultants and clients, and a commercial mindset that balances design integrity with project deliverability.
Regional Site Travel
While this role is based in Melbourne, the company's health portfolio includes projects in regional Victoria. Travel to regional sites will be required, with frequency dependent on project phase and stakeholder engagement needs. All travel is fully supported by the business.
What's on Offer
A competitive remuneration package reflective of experience, genuine career progression within a national builder, exposure to landmark health projects, and a collaborative leadership team that values technical excellence and accountability.
