Drainage Leading Hand – Wellington

Take the Next Step Into Leadership

$30 - $40 per hour + Work Vehicle

RobLawMax Recruitment is seeking an experienced Drainage Leading Hand to join a respected civil construction contractor in Wellington. This is an excellent opportunity for a capable drainlayer or senior crew member ready to take on more responsibility, lead a small team, and further develop their leadership skills.

If you're looking to move beyond being "one of the crew" and into a role where you can mentor others, take ownership of projects, and make a real impact on site performance, this could be the opportunity you've been waiting for.

About the Role

As a Drainage Leading Hand, you'll lead a crew of 1–3 people while remaining hands-on in the field. You'll be trusted to organise daily activities, maintain productivity, and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.

This role offers genuine responsibility and autonomy, making it ideal for someone looking to establish themselves as a site leader and build a long-term career in civil construction.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Leading and coordinating a small drainage crew
  • Setting out and installing sumps and drainage leads
  • Completing tie-ins to existing manholes and networks
  • Reading and interpreting plans and site drawings
  • Using laser levels, rotary lasers, and pipe lasers
  • Installing and grading drainage pipework accurately
  • Maintaining strong health and safety standards
  • Ensuring projects are completed on time and to specification

What We're Looking For

You may already be working as a Leading Hand, or you could be an experienced Drainlayer looking for the opportunity to step into a leadership position.

To be successful, you'll have:

  • Strong drainage and civil construction experience
  • The ability to work independently and make sound decisions on-site
  • A proactive approach to planning and organising work
  • Confidence leading by example and supporting team members
  • Good communication and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working around underground services

Advantageous Qualifications

  • Previous Leading Hand or Senior Drainlayer experience
  • Knowledge of Wellington Water standards and local authority requirements
  • Class 2 licence
  • WTR endorsements
  • Relevant drainage or civil construction qualifications

What's On Offer?

  • Competitive pay of $30–$40 per hour, depending on experience
  • Company vehicle for work purposes
  • Long-term, stable work with a reputable employer
  • The opportunity to lead your own crew
  • Greater responsibility and autonomy on-site
  • A role that supports your progression into broader supervisory and leadership positions

If you're ready to take the next step in your career and build your leadership experience while remaining hands-on in the field, call Steve today on 021 650 717.
