ABOUT THE COMPANY
Lotus People are working with a fast-growing fintech who is on a mission to make life easier for self-employed professionals across Australia, New Zealand and the UK, handling the tax and compliance load so their customers can focus on their own work.

ABOUT THE ROLE
As the first dedicated Compliance Lead in Australia, you'll build the local function from scratch, reporting into the Head of Legal & Compliance and working closely with the Tax Manager, Customer Operations and Strategy teams in Sydney. Expect plenty of autonomy on risk calls across payments, AML/CTF, data privacy and regulatory reporting, backed by genuine support to grow into the role rather than being left to figure it out alone.

DUTIES
  • Act as the second line of defence for Sydney's operations teams, keeping an eye on how compliance is being managed across payments, AFSL obligations, AML/CTF, data privacy and regulatory reporting
  • Spot patterns and gaps across existing controls and automations, from testing whether current flagging tools are earning their keep to catching trends nobody's noticed yet
  • Make the judgement calls on issues that carry real risk, deciding what can be signed off and what needs to go up the chain
  • Build out the local compliance framework as the business scales across Australia, New Zealand and the UK
  • Turn findings into clear, structured reporting for the Head of Legal & Compliance and other stakeholders
  • Run periodic reviews of existing controls and processes, testing whether they're actually holding up
  • Track regulatory change, including Australia's evolving AUSTRAC obligations, and translate what it means for the business
  • Support the end-to-end preparation, review and lodgement of regulatory reports and disclosures
  • Maintain accurate, audit-ready policies, procedures and documentation
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
  • At least 5 years in risk, compliance or assurance within a regulated industry, ideally with time spent giving second line oversight rather than just doing the operational work yourself
  • Genuine confidence making risk-based calls independently, especially useful if you've come from a heavily governed environment
  • A track record of reviewing controls, spotting risk and turning that into practical improvements
  • Communication skills that flex, comfortable explaining compliance concepts to a technical audience and a customer-facing team in the same week
  • A relevant degree in Law, Commerce, Finance, Risk or Compliance
BENEFITS
  • A genuine ground-floor opportunity as the first compliance hire in Australia, with clear scope to grow the function
  • Choice of career pathway
  • Tuesday lunches
  • Monthly wellbeing allowance to use as you choose
  • Regular team lunches and a genuinely collaborative, down-to-earth culture
  • Day off for your birthday
  • Parental leave support
