Davidson is the proud recruitment partner of SEC Victoria as they accelerate Victoria’s renewable energy transition.

Do work that makes a difference
SEC is building an enterprising and dynamic team to accelerate Victoria’s transition to renewables and help achieve Victoria’s renewable energy target of 95% by 2035. We are working together for renewable, affordable, reliable energy for all Victorians.

We have an exciting and ambitious road ahead with a focus on:

  • Investing in renewable energy and storage projects that accelerate the transition and deliver commercial returns.
  • Supporting households to go electric to reduce their emissions and energy bills.
  • Retailing electricity to Victorian Government operations and Victorian businesses to help them decarbonise.
  • Underpinning all of this is SEC’s work to support the renewable energy workforce our energy transition requires.

SEC is partnering with industry to transform the energy sector, opening the state up for further innovation and investments in renewables. This includes an initial $1 billion towards delivering 4.5 gigawatts of power through renewable energy and storage projects – the equivalent replacement capacity of coal-fired power station Loy Yang A, which is set to close in 2035.

Your role
As a Senior Market Modeller at the SEC, you will play a pivotal role in shaping strategic investment and planning decisions through the development of long-term energy market forecasts. Using industry-leading modelling tools such as PLEXOS, you will simulate future changes across generation, storage and transmission assets within the National Electricity Market, providing critical insights that support the SEC’s strategic priorities and investment decisions. You will lead the ongoing enhancement of market forecasting capabilities, developing credible outlooks for capacity, demand, generation and wholesale energy prices in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.

This is an opportunity for an experienced energy market professional to combine deep technical expertise with strategic influence. You will develop and assess energy transition scenarios, support due diligence on major investment opportunities, and provide thought leadership on key market trends and policy developments. With strong analytical skills, a collaborative approach and the ability to communicate complex concepts to diverse stakeholders, you will help drive informed decision-making and contribute to Victoria’s renewable energy future.

This role can be based in either our Melbourne CBD office or our regional office located in Morwell.

What you will do:
Core accountabilities include:

  • Market modelling & forecasting: Lead the development and continuous improvement of long-term energy market models and forecasts for capacity, generation, demand, and wholesale prices to support SEC’s strategic priorities.
  • Scenario analysis: Develop and maintain energy transition scenarios, applying market expertise and professional judgement to establish assumptions and forecasts for stakeholder and Board endorsement.
  • Project due diligence: Support investment assessments and asset valuations by conducting market due diligence with internal stakeholders and external advisors, updating models as required.
  • Thought leadership: Provide strategic market insights, contribute to energy market discussions, and support key initiatives that advance SEC’s strategic objectives.

Who you are:
Experiences and Skills:

Must Have:

  • Your capabilities and areas of expertise that matter most for this role are:
  • 5+ years’ experience in energy market modelling, using PLEXOS software or similar, with a focus on the renewable energy sector, preferably in the Australian context;
  • Tertiary qualifications (honours or advanced desirable) in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering and/or another relevant specialisation;
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to collaboratively interpret modelling results and produce and distribute meaningful insights across the organisation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to explain complex technical details to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Aligned to the SEC ways of working and cultural behaviours, with an unwavering customer focus, striving for continuous improvement, and demonstrating a proactive can-do, attitude in what is a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Highly Desirable:

  • Advanced proficiency in programming languages to support data processing and workflow development, with preferences for Python, R and/or SQL.
  • Working knowledge of energy market principles governing the operation of the National Electricity Market, including dispatch processes, generator behaviour, network constraints and system operability.
  • An appreciation of Victorian Government policy targets, initiatives, and goals.

An empowered workforce
A career with SEC means you’ll be joining a new and vibrant ‘for purpose’ government-owned renewable energy company that:

  • Empowers you to influence how we accelerate Victoria’s renewable energy transition and decarbonise our economy.
  • Inspires you through meaningful, challenging work in an environment that encourages leadership and an entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Supports your growth through career advancement and professional development opportunities.
  • Provides hybrid work arrangements, with around 3 days working in Melbourne or Morwell, with flexible work options to meet individual circumstances, providing greater choice and autonomy.
