About The Company
We're partnering exclusively with a well-established, maintenance business specialising in the inspection, cleaning, repair and compliance maintenance of stormwater treatment devices, drainage infrastructure and water sensitive urban design (WSUD) assets across Australia. The business operates a mobile, field-based workforce servicing a growing base of council, Tier 1/Tier 2 civil contractor, developer and commercial property clients, all of whom rely on it to keep critical infrastructure compliant, functional and audit-ready.

Off the back of a sustained period of growth, the business is now seeking an experienced General Manager to take full commercial and operational ownership of the division and lead it into its next phase.

The Opportunity
This is not a corporate GM role sitting behind a desk. It's full P&L ownership of a field-based maintenance business with 15-20 people on the road every day, spread across multiple states. You'll be the person who genuinely understands how a maintenance business runs, scheduling, crews, plant and fleet, compliance, margin, and who can also step out into the market and win the next contract.

You'll inherit strong foundations: an established client base, a loyal and experienced field workforce, and the backing of a broader group with real scale. What's needed now is someone who can professionalise how the business operates, tighten up systems and reporting, and take the commercial pipeline to the next level, without losing the on-the-ground credibility that makes this kind of business work.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Owning full operational and commercial performance of a maintenance business, including budgeting, margin management and reporting
  • Leading, coaching and developing a team of 15-20 field-based employees, including State/Regional Managers, supervisors and crews
  • Overseeing scheduling, crew utilisation, fleet and plant management, and subcontractor relationships to keep service delivery consistent across all regions serviced
  • Driving business development, leading tenders, renewing and expanding contracts, and building relationships with councils, Tier 1/2 civil contractors and developers
  • Ensuring works are delivered to WHS, environmental and regulatory standards across every jurisdiction, with robust systems for audit and compliance reporting
  • Professionalising scheduling, job management and field reporting systems to support the business as it scales
  • Acting as the senior client-facing point of contact for key accounts, ensuring retention and satisfaction across the portfolio
  • Reporting directly to senior leadership, with genuine autonomy to shape strategy and operating rhythm
What You'll Bring
  • Genuine experience running, not just working within, a civil, stormwater, drainage or field-based maintenance business, ideally with P&L accountability 
  • A real understanding of what it takes to operate a maintenance business day to day: recurring contracts, crew scheduling, compliance obligations, margin discipline and fleet/plant management
  • A commercial, sales-oriented mindset, comfortable tendering, negotiating contracts and actively growing a client base, not solely focused on operations
  • Proven leadership of dispersed, field-based teams (15+ staff), including managers and supervisors reporting through to you
  • Based in, or willing to relocate to, Brisbane or Sydney, with a willingness to travel regularly to service other states
Desirable
  • Background specifically in stormwater, drainage, WSUD, civil maintenance, waste/liquid waste, or related environmental services
  • Existing relationships with local councils, Tier 1/Tier 2 civil contractors or developers
  • Tertiary qualification in civil/environmental engineering, construction management or business, though this is not essential if backed by strong industry experience
  • Experience operating within, or integrating with, a broader group structure
