  • Shape national retail energy policy and strengthen AEC’s voice with government, regulators and industry
  • Turn complex regulatory issues into clear, compelling positions that influence energy reform
  • Build member consensus and help AEC move from reactive submissions to proactive advocacy

The Australian Energy Council (AEC) is the peak body representing leading energy retailers and generators operating across Australia. Its members supply energy to more than 10 million homes and businesses and play a critical role in delivering a reliable, affordable and increasingly decarbonised energy system.

Through policy advocacy, industry engagement and thought leadership, AEC works with governments, regulators, market bodies and consumer representatives to shape the future of Australia’s energy market. As the sector undergoes significant change, AEC is strengthening its ability to engage earlier, build consensus and contribute proactively to national energy reform.

About the Role:

Reporting to the General Manager Retail Policy, the Policy & Advocacy Manager will connect policy development, member engagement and external advocacy across AEC’s retail agenda. Working closely with other senior members of the AEC team, you will turn complex regulatory and market issues into clear, evidence-based positions that influence decision-makers.

Key priorities will include:

  • Leading engagement with AEC’s Retail Working Group, synthesising specialist member input and building alignment around shared priorities.
  • Building trusted relationships with members, policymakers, regulators, market bodies and consumer representatives.
  • Identifying emerging retail policy issues and progressing proactive reform across areas such as consumer pricing, consumer protections and consumer energy resources.
  • Developing advocacy strategies and working with policy and communications colleagues to produce submissions, briefings and compelling external narratives.

About You

You will be a relationship-led energy professional who can engage credibly with experienced policy and regulatory stakeholders while remaining comfortable with complexity and detail. You may not be a career policy specialist, but you will be able to quickly understand technical concepts, identify what matters and communicate a clear and persuasive position.

You will bring:

  • Experience within the energy sector, ideally gained in a retailer, market body, regulator, government agency, peak body or consumer organisation.
  • A sound understanding of policy or regulatory processes and the ability to analyse complex technical, legal or commercial information.
  • Demonstrated stakeholder engagement and influencing capability, including experience building consensus across differing perspectives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, sound judgement and the ability to prioritise and manage competing outcomes across diverse stakeholder groups.

This is an opportunity to join a small, highly influential organisation and help shape policy outcomes affecting Australia’s energy retailers, consumers and broader energy transition.
