Principal Mechanical & Piping Designer

Principal Mechanical & Piping Design Manager 12-Month Contract | Brisbane Based | Hybrid Working Available

An established engineering and project delivery organisation is seeking a highly experienced Lead Mechanical & Piping Design Manager to support a portfolio of major mining and minerals processing projects.
This role will provide technical leadership across complex multidiscipline project environments, overseeing mechanical and piping design delivery from studies and FEED through to detailed design, construction support and commissioning. You will work closely with project teams, stakeholders and global execution centres to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.

The role

Technical leadership

• Lead the development of complex plant layouts and piping system designs.
• Provide technical direction across multidisciplinary design teams.
• Oversee model reviews, constructability assessments, design verification and quality assurance activities.
• Drive the development of practical, safe and efficient engineering solutions.
• Ensure maintainability, operability, accessibility and safety considerations are incorporated throughout the design process.
• Mentor and develop designers, lead designers and discipline personnel.

Global delivery and coordination

• Coordinate design execution between local and international project delivery teams.
• Support workshare planning, resource allocation and design governance activities.
• Review and approve critical project deliverables and design documentation.
• Champion digital engineering, 3D modelling and model-based design initiatives.
• Promote consistency and quality across project execution teams.

Client and project support

• Assist with project proposals, estimates and tender submissions.
• Participate in technical workshops and client presentations.
• Contribute to project execution strategies and delivery planning.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, project teams and stakeholders.
• Provide technical input to project pursuits and business development activities.

About you

• Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering Design or related discipline.
• Significant industry experience may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
• Typically 15+ years of mechanical and piping design experience within mining, minerals processing or heavy industrial projects.
• Extensive experience leading large multidisciplinary design teams.
• Proven background delivering projects across study phases, FEED, EPCM delivery, construction support and commissioning.
• Strong leadership, mentoring and stakeholder management skills.
• Excellent communication and influencing capabilities.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality and continuous improvement.

Technical expertise Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly regarded:

• Mineral processing facilities
• Materials handling systems
• Hydromet and process plant infrastructure
• Underground mining facilities
• Ventilation and bulk services systems
• Process and slurry piping systems
• 3D model management and integration
• Digital engineering environments

Software experience Advanced proficiency in:

• AVEVA E3D
• Smart 3D (S3D)
• AutoCAD Plant 3D
• Navisworks
• AutoCAD
