Job Summary

We're looking for an experienced Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) professional to serve as a second-level CDI reviewer and subject-matter expert for a healthcare system's CDI program. In this fully remote role, you'll manage CDI work queues, perform post-coding/pre-bill reviews, evaluate audit recommendations and query validity, issue follow-up queries, and mentor the CDI team on complex coding, query, and procedure-coding questions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a clinical subject-matter expert, mentor, and liaison for the CDI, Coding, and Quality teams, including onboarding and training new staff
  • Identify educational opportunities from medical record reviews and provide feedback to individuals and, where relevant, to trainers and the broader CDI/Coding teams
  • Perform second-level clinical reviews for high-impact targeted metrics, including targeted DRGs, DRG mismatches, compliance, and CDI quality
  • Review potential Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs) for exclusion criteria and escalate unresolved cases to the Physician Advisor
  • Partner with Coding, Quality, Leadership, Physician Champions, Physician Advisors, and other care team members as a CDI liaison
  • Manage the concurrent physician query escalation process to support query completion prior to discharge
  • Prioritize and manage a shifting caseload as assignments, priorities, and deadlines change
  • Escalate risks and issues to CDI leadership for timely resolution, with clear written and verbal communication

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of acute hospital-based CDI experience
  • Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Current CDI certification: CCDS (Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist) or CDIP (Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner)
  • Strong working knowledge of CDI guidelines, Coding Clinic guidance, and query best practices
  • Able to work a full-time, 8-hour schedule with a consistent start time between 5:00–9:00 AM Central Time; day-shift hours preferred
  • Candidates may not reside in: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, or Washington
