About the Role
This is a high-autonomy senior underwriting position for a commercial lines professional ready to own an established book of business and grow it further. You will work directly with a dedicated broker network, analyze submissions, set pricing, negotiate terms, and make confident coverage decisions — within a collaborative team that values expertise and entrepreneurial drive.
The right candidate inherits long-standing broker relationships and is trusted to manage them independently, while actively soliciting new business and contributing to departmental profitability. A hybrid schedule is offered, with remote flexibility available for an experienced self-starter.
Core Responsibilities
- Collect, review, and analyze broker submissions to assess liability exposure, coverage needs, and appropriate pricing
- Manage an existing portfolio of broker accounts and build your own expanding book of business
- Solicit new business from brokers; negotiate terms, conditions, and premiums to ensure profitability
- Provide management with informed recommendations on application approvals and risk strategy
- Maintain detailed, accurate records of underwriting decisions, policies, binders, and endorsements
- Follow up with brokers on outstanding documentation items and policy inspections
- Develop deep expertise in all carrier coverage forms, endorsements, and underwriting guidelines
- Collaborate cross-functionally on risk strategy and assist in maintaining a profitable book
- Make confident, educated coverage decisions on behalf of the company and its carriers
Qualifications
Technical Requirements
- 5+ years of commercial casualty underwriting experience
- Expertise in Commercial General Liability and/or Excess Liability
- Strong understanding of policy provisions and loss exposure analysis
- Ability to interpret and apply carrier guidelines independently
- College degree preferred but not required
- Insurance designations (CIC, CPCU, etc.) advantageous
