Exciting Opportunity: Senior AI Engineer (12-Month Contract, ACT)

The client, a prominent government department committed to advancing innovative technology solutions, is seeking an experienced Senior AI Engineer to join their team. This hybrid role offers a dynamic environment with a mix of in-office and remote work, based in Canberra, and is ideal for a seasoned professional passionate about delivering impactful AI solutions within a regulated setting. The position is scheduled to commence on 01/09/2026, with a maximum initial duration of 12 months, including potential extensions.

As the selected candidate, you will:

• Design, develop, and deploy scalable AI solutions leveraging Azure AI services and Microsoft technologies.
• Build and maintain AI agents, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) solutions, workflow automation, and intelligent business applications.
• Develop intuitive front-end interfaces to enhance user adoption and maximise the value of AI initiatives.
• Create APIs, integrations, and microservices to connect AI capabilities with departmental systems and external data sources.
• Design and implement data pipelines, vector search, and document intelligence solutions to support AI-powered services.
• Conduct testing, evaluation, and validation activities to ensure solution accuracy, reliability, and performance.
• Support AI assurance activities including bias testing, explainability assessments, and security reviews.
• Implement governance, privacy, and security controls aligned with departmental policies and responsible AI principles.
• Contribute to the registration, assessment, and assurance of AI use cases within departmental governance frameworks.
• Produce comprehensive technical documentation, operational procedures, and knowledge transfer materials.
• Collaborate closely with business stakeholders to identify AI opportunities that improve productivity, decision-making, and service delivery.

To be successful in this role you should have:

• Proven experience designing, developing, and deploying enterprise AI solutions using Microsoft technologies such as Azure AI Foundry, Copilot Studio, and AI Agents.
• Demonstrated expertise in integrating AI solutions with enterprise systems, APIs, databases, and business applications, including Retrieval Augmented Generation.
• A solid understanding of AI governance, responsible AI principles, security, privacy, and assurance requirements within a government or highly regulated environment.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to translate business needs into impactful AI use cases.
• Excellent communication, documentation, and collaborative working skills, with experience in knowledge transfer and capacity building.
• Ability to work effectively within a team, ensuring best practices and innovative solutions are shared across the organisation.

It is desirable if you have:

• Prior experience working within government or similar highly regulated environments.
• Certification or training in AI governance, privacy, or security standards.
• Knowledge of additional Microsoft AI tools and frameworks not listed above.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results within tight deadlines.
