Job Title: CNM1 and Staff Nurse

Department: Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory
Reports to: Nurse Manager / CNM2

Overall Purpose of the Role

The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, directing and overseeing the day-to-day clinical and operational activities of the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory. The post holder will work collaboratively with the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory team and the wider Cardiology multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

The Clinical Coordinator will:

  • Coordinate and oversee the daily delivery of patient care within the unit.

  • Assess patient care requirements and analyse workload and staffing needs to ensure appropriate allocation of resources.

  • Assess staff competencies and allocate patient care responsibilities appropriately.

  • Delegate duties and responsibilities in accordance with legal and professional requirements, departmental policies and established standards.

  • Maintain effective communication with the Nurse Manager regarding operational requirements, patient care concerns, staffing issues and incidents.

  • Act as a clinical and professional resource for staff within the unit.

  • Provide direct patient care and clinical support when required.

  • Identify and maintain appropriate internal controls within the department and contribute to mechanisms that monitor compliance.

  • Ensure adherence to departmental policies, procedures, guidelines and internal controls.

  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the role as required.

Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Practise in accordance with the relevant professional standards and the Professional Scope of Practice Framework issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

  • Maintain a high standard of clinical practice and professional conduct.

  • Promote safe, evidence-based and patient-centred care.

  • Ensure that patient care is delivered in accordance with organisational policies, procedures and clinical guidelines.

  • Support the delivery of high-quality care within the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory.

  • Escalate clinical concerns and patient safety issues appropriately and promptly.

Managerial Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Identify and communicate operational, clinical and staffing issues to the Nurse Manager in a timely manner.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in relevant organisational policies, procedures and clinical guidelines.

  • Ensure that all required clinical and operational documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Respond appropriately to patient and service-user complaints and escalate concerns where necessary.

  • Monitor and contribute to risk management processes within the department.

  • Promote effective communication and collaboration across the multidisciplinary team.

  • Ensure the efficient and appropriate use of human, financial and other departmental resources.

  • Participate in unit and hospital-wide nursing communication processes.

  • Support the Nurse Manager in maintaining effective standards of service delivery.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Allocate patient workloads appropriately, taking into consideration patient acuity, clinical requirements, staff competence and skill mix.

  • Provide direct and indirect supervision to Staff Nurses, Healthcare Assistants and unit reception staff as appropriate.

  • Monitor the delivery of patient care and provide guidance and support to staff.

  • Promote a safe, supportive and professional working environment.

  • Identify and escalate performance, competency or staffing concerns appropriately.

Interprofessional Relationships

The post holder will:

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all relevant departments, medical staff, patients, families and external agencies.

  • Maintain effective communication with the Nurse Manager and Nurse Supervisor throughout the shift.

  • Demonstrate effective delegation of duties and responsibilities.

  • Participate in ongoing consultation and collaboration with physicians and other members of the multidisciplinary team to optimise patient outcomes and achieve unit-specific objectives.

  • Promote effective communication and teamwork within the clinical environment.

  • Demonstrate a willingness to support colleagues and assist with workload when required.

  • Promote a culture of respect, professionalism and collaborative practice.

Quality Improvement and Risk Management

The post holder will actively participate in quality management and continuous improvement processes, contributing to:

  • The identification and review of quality, policy and guideline issues.

  • The evaluation of current clinical practices against evidence-based and best-practice standards.

  • The development and implementation of appropriate clinical and operational standards using structure, process and outcome measures.

  • Hospital, regional and national audit processes.

  • Accreditation and quality-assurance processes.

  • Health promotion and patient education initiatives.

  • The identification and implementation of opportunities to improve patient safety, quality of care and service delivery.

  • The monitoring and review of clinical risks and implementation of appropriate risk-reduction measures.

  • Educational Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, the post holder will:

  • Develop and utilise effective teaching and facilitation skills within the clinical environment.

  • Participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of orientation and clinical teaching programmes for student nurses.

  • Provide appropriate feedback to Nurse Managers to support the completion of student nurse proficiency assessments.

  • Contribute to the identification of education and training needs within the clinical area.

  • Identify and contribute to the development of learning opportunities for staff within the department.

  • Participate in the clinical induction and orientation of newly appointed nursing and support staff.

  • Develop leadership skills and act as a positive and effective professional role model.

  • Support staff development through appropriate coaching, supervision and feedback.

  • Take responsibility for identifying and addressing personal learning and professional development needs.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) as a Registered General Nurse, with registration maintained in good standing.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

Desirable:

  • Relevant postgraduate qualification or specialist education in cardiology, cardiac nursing, cardiac catheterisation or a related area.

  • Where a relevant postgraduate qualification is not currently held, willingness to undertake an appropriate postgraduate programme within 18 months of commencing the Clinical Coordinator role.

Experience

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • A minimum of two years' relevant clinical experience within a Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory.

  • Demonstrable experience in clinical leadership and coordination.

  • Experience in teaching, mentoring and supporting nursing and healthcare staff.

  • Experience of working effectively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Demonstrable professional judgement and the ability to make appropriate clinical decisions.

  • Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • The ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks effectively within a busy clinical environment.

  • Effective time-management and organisational skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • A commitment to continuing professional development and lifelong learning.

  • The ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English, with a high standard of grammar and professional communication.
