THE OPPORTUNITY

Currently, they are looking for a Laboratory Director for their facilities in Spain to oversee the strategic direction and operations of two unique laboratories within the organization. While this role involves managerial responsibilities, it's important to note that the day-to-day execution and supervision of lab activities will be delegated to specialized teams.
The labs specialize in growing commercialized plant varieties for Spain and Morocco, responsible for producing tissue culture with a primary focus on Blueberries, as well as Asparagus, Garlic, and Raspberry plants.

Here are some specific tasks and responsibilities that you might undertake:
- Reporting to the Spanish Operations Manager, you will be responsible for the in-vitro multiplication in the propagation laboratory of blackberry, raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, garlic, and asparagus plants.
- Monitoring of multiplications and growth of in vitro cultures.
- Design the best techniques and culture media for the multiplication of the different in vitro cultures.
- Enhance team efficiency by applying laboratory expertise, organising activities, and delegating tasks effectively.
- Develop innovative strategies to optimise tissue culture and propagation methods in berry cultivation.
- Ensure seamless laboratory operations through improved inventory management, team coordination, and workspace organisation.
- Implement a strategic 6–12-month improvement plan to enhance overall laboratory efficiency.
- Exercise budget oversight, analysing allocations and expenditures for optimal resource utilisation and fiscal responsibility.

YOUR EXPERTISE
Minimum education/qualification/experience
- A degree in Plant Sciences, Microbiology, Biology, Agricultural Engineering, or any related field.
- 10 to 15 years of hands-on laboratory experience, including a minimum of 5 years in management.
- Demonstrate a solid foundation in plant sciences, with a strong preference for expertise in berry plants, though other crop experience will be considered.
- Proficiency in tissue culture specifications and techniques is essential.
- Previous experience in both production and R&D environments, encompassing practical involvement in berry production, as well as an understanding of the scientific and research processes involved in berry varietal development.
- Team Management/Leadership experience.
- Someone who is open-minded.
- Thrives in a continuous improvement environment.
- Work cross-functionally with other departments and maintain good relationships.
- International mindset.
- Native Spanish speaker – with medium-level English OR Native English speaker - with Spanish language.
- Strong technical knowledge backed by a degree in a relevant field.
- Strategic skills – proven success in developing strategies.
- Must be in commutable distance to the laboratories in Navarra, Spain or willing to relocate.
