Senior Instrumentation & Control Engineer About the role An established owner’s team is seeking a Senior Instrumentation & Control Engineer to support the development and delivery of major industrial, process plant, infrastructure and emerging energy projects.
This role provides technical leadership across instrumentation, control systems, communications, functional safety and industrial cybersecurity. Working within a multidisciplinary environment, you will contribute to project studies, design development, technology selection and engineering governance across both greenfield and brownfield projects.
You will collaborate closely with internal engineering teams, project managers, contractors, equipment suppliers and external consultants to ensure technical outcomes are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with industry standards.
Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across instrumentation, control systems and communications engineering activities.
• Lead and review engineering studies for process plants, utilities, infrastructure and energy-related projects.
• Support the development of concepts, feasibility studies, FEED packages and detailed design deliverables.
• Prepare technical scopes, engineering documentation and project cost estimates.
• Develop and review control philosophies, functional descriptions, cause and effect matrices and logic diagrams.
• Provide technical input into P&IDs, instrumentation specifications, instrument datasheets and control system architecture.
• Work closely with equipment vendors and technology suppliers to optimise control system solutions.
• Support plant layout reviews to ensure instrumentation and control requirements are appropriately incorporated.
• Review contractor designs and verify compliance with project requirements and applicable standards.
• Manage and oversee functional safety activities in accordance with recognised industry frameworks.
• Support industrial cybersecurity design reviews and compliance activities.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering interfaces across process, mechanical, electrical and civil disciplines.
• Contribute to engineering governance, technical assurance and risk management processes.
• Mentor and support the development of junior and intermediate engineers.

About you To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering or a related discipline.
• Membership of a recognised professional engineering body or eligibility for membership.
• A minimum of 10 years' experience in instrumentation, control and communications engineering.
• Strong experience delivering projects within mining, minerals processing, industrial processing, energy, utilities or heavy industry sectors.
• Demonstrated experience leading technical work packages and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
• Commitment to safe design principles and engineering best practice.

Technical requirements Essential:

• Instrumentation and control system design experience across major industrial facilities.
• Experience developing control system architectures and instrumentation design packages.
• Knowledge of Australian and international engineering standards and industry best practice.
• Experience preparing and reviewing engineering studies, specifications and technical documentation.
• Strong understanding of process plant operations and associated control strategies.
• Experience working with contractors, consultants and OEM suppliers.

Highly regarded:

• Functional Safety experience in accordance with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511.
• TÜV or Exida Functional Safety certification.
• Industrial Cybersecurity experience aligned with IEC 62443.
• Brownfield upgrade and modification project experience.
• Previous project lead or supervisory experience.
• Experience mentoring and developing less experienced engineers.
