About the Role

The client is progressing its Digital & Technology Services initiatives to modernise its technology environment, improve cloud adoption, strengthen infrastructure resilience, and enhance security and operational performance across the organisation. The client is seeking an experienced Infrastructure Operations Lead who will provide end-to-end operational ownership while remaining technically hands-on across Microsoft Azure, on-premises infrastructure, hybrid platforms, identity, enterprise networking, backup, disaster recovery, monitoring, automation, security controls, lifecycle management, licensing, vendors and managed services.

The candidate will lead complex operational work, support project delivery and platform uplift, resolve technical issues, maintain service continuity and ensure that infrastructure services are secure, reliable, scalable, documented and aligned with the client's architecture and standards.


About You

Operational leadership and service ownership

· Own day-to-day infrastructure operations and coordinate priorities across cloud, servers, storage, networking, identity, backup and managed services.

· Monitor service availability, performance, capacity, security, recoverability, risks and operational dependencies; provide concise reporting and timely escalation.

· Lead response to major infrastructure incidents and service disruptions, including triage, technical diagnosis, supplier coordination, recovery, stakeholder communications and post-incident improvement.

Cloud platform engineering

· Design, build, configure, administer and optimise Microsoft Azure services across compute, storage, identity, networking, monitoring and security.

· Design and support secure hybrid-cloud solutions and integration between cloud and on-premises environments.

· Plan, execute and validate cloud migration and platform-uplift activities.

Infrastructure and systems engineering

· Design, implement, manage and troubleshoot server, storage, virtualisation, hyperconverged infrastructure and supporting platform services.

· Maintain and optimise on-premises and hybrid infrastructure environments.

· Plan and execute upgrades, patching, lifecycle remediation, performance tuning and capacity improvements.

Enterprise networking and connectivity

· Oversee and troubleshoot enterprise firewalls, web application firewalls, switching, routing, DNS, network segmentation, secure remote access and site connectivity.

· Maintain network availability, performance, security and configuration integrity across Council locations.

Identity, access and Microsoft 365 integration

· Support identity and access management across cloud and on-premises environments, including secure integration with Microsoft 365 and Azure services.

· Implement and maintain appropriate access, authentication and privileged-administration controls in collaboration with Cyber Security.

Backup, disaster recovery and business continuity

· Maintain robust backup, disaster recovery and business-continuity capabilities across critical infrastructure services.

· Confirm that recovery objectives, including RTO and RPO, are documented, achievable, monitored and tested.

Security, risk and compliance

· Embed security-by-design across infrastructure, cloud, identity and network decisions.

· Implement and maintain infrastructure controls aligned with Council requirements and frameworks including Essential Eight, NIST CSF and VPDSS.

· Lead or coordinate vulnerability remediation, security uplift, infrastructure risk treatment and support for cyber incident response.

Monitoring, automation and optimisation

· Implement and improve monitoring, alerting, logging, dashboards and operational visibility across cloud and infrastructure environments.

· Automate infrastructure deployment, administration and configuration through scripting or infrastructure-as-code approaches where appropriate.

Project delivery and transition to operations

· Work with project managers, solution architects and technical teams to deliver infrastructure components of DTS projects.

· Provide technical input into solution design, architecture, implementation planning and risk assessment.

Vendor, commercial and stakeholder management

· Manage infrastructure vendors, contracts, managed service providers, service performance and agreed actions.

· Coordinate technical resources and suppliers, challenge underperformance and escalate where required.

Team leadership, documentation and knowledge transfer

· Provide technical leadership, coaching and prioritisation to Council staff and external resources.

· Develop and maintain architecture diagrams, configuration records, operational procedures, runbooks, support information and decision records.
