Apply direct- Non-executive Board leadership role
- Statewide youth charity since 1976
- Improve outcomes for young people
About the organisation
Blue Light Victoria (BLV) is a statewide youth charity focused on early intervention and prevention for young people aged 10 to 21. Founded in 1976 commencing with drug- and alcohol-free youth discos, BLV now delivers programs and initiatives to more than 10,000 young people each year. BLV's evidence-based, trauma-informed programs bring young people together with police, emergency services, schools and communities to strengthen belonging, build trusted relationships, improve wellbeing and create safer, stronger communities. The charity is distinguished by its partnerships with police and emergency services, and is guided by the values of Connection, Growth, Innovation and Respect. BLV is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and child safety.
About the role
BLV is seeking a Director with the capability and aspiration to contribute to the leadership of the Board, with the opportunity to assume the Chair role either on appointment or as part of future Board succession. As a Board member you will contribute to the Board's governance of BLV and its oversight of strategy, organisational performance, impact, financial sustainability and risk, while maintaining clear boundaries between governance and management. For a candidate appointed as Chair, or transitioning to the Chair role in the future, responsibilities will include chairing Board and member meetings, setting agendas with the CEO and Secretary, working with the Deputy Chair on continuity and succession, and leading Board and Director evaluation, renewal and development. The Chair also acts as the primary point of contact between the Board and CEO, leading CEO appointment, goal-setting, performance evaluation, remuneration review and succession planning on behalf of the Board. As a Director, you will also play an important role in representing BLV and strengthening relationships with Victoria Police, government, schools, community partners, funders, donors, branches and volunteers, with a sustained focus on child safety, youth voice, diversity, equity and inclusion. The Director position is a voluntary, non-executive, appointment for a term of up to 3 years, and Chair is for 12 months with eligibility for reappointment at each Annual General Meeting
About you
You are a senior leader with substantial governance experience and a sound understanding of the role and responsibilities of a non-executive Director. Previous Board experience is highly desirable, as is completion of the AICD Company Directors Course or an equivalent governance qualification. You may already have Chair experience or be ready to step into a Chair role, either on appointment or as part of future Board succession planning. You bring strong strategic judgement, financial literacy and an understanding of governance, risk and regulatory oversight, with the ability to assess complex information and guide collective decision-making. Your well-established networks and natural ability to connect people with purpose, will help BLV broaden its funding beyond government sources and support its long-term sustainability. Underpinning your ability to support and work constructively with a CEO and maintain appropriate boundaries between the Board, Chair and CEO, is important, as are your independence, integrity and confidence to challenge constructively. You hold a genuine commitment to BLV's purpose, values, child safety and improving outcomes for young people
