About WATC

As the State’s central financial services provider, Western Australian Treasury Corporation (WATC) cares about the financial health of Western Australia’s government sector. WATC partner with government entities to achieve sound financial outcomes and provide access to a comprehensive range of corporate finance, debt and investment, risk management and foreign exchange products and advisory services. They also provide their investors with secure and sustainable opportunities.
You can find out more about the organisation including WATC’s purpose, history and key activities by visiting the About Us tab on the WATC website.

The Opportunity

Due to internal promotion, an opportunity for an experienced financial risk professional has arisen within WATC. Working in the Risk Management team, the Principal Risk Advisor will play a pivotal role within a broad and strategically significant portfolio encompassing credit risk, investment oversight and supporting WATC’s strategic initiatives.
As Principal Risk Advisor, you will be a principal source of expertise on credit-related matters and provide strategic, commercially informed advice that extends beyond traditional risk processes. You will work closely with senior stakeholders, support key governance forums, and contribute to decisions with significant financial and public sector impact.

The role also provides the opportunity to lead and develop two direct reports while driving continuous improvement across established practices and processes.
Key activities include:
• Providing expert advice on credit-related matters, including local government lending assessments.
• Overseeing credit monitoring activities and supporting the Executive Credit Committee.
• Coordinating monthly credit reporting to the Board.
• Managing key relationships with Treasury to support the State’s credit ratings, together with oversight over investment portfolios in the State.
• Contributing strategic advice across credit risk, investments and broader financial risk matters.
• Supporting WATC strategic initiatives that deliver meaningful financial and public sector outcomes.
• Identifying and implementing opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Leading, supporting and developing two direct reports.
• Building productive relationships and influencing stakeholders across a complex operating environment.

About You

WATC’s ideal candidate will bring broad commercial and financial experience, sound risk judgement, and the confidence to challenge established practices constructively. While a strong understanding of credit analysis and financial risk is important, this is not a narrowly technical role.
Success will require the ability to understand financial risk in context, apply a strategic and commercial lens, and contribute across a broad portfolio. You will be comfortable considering the wider implications of risk decisions and identifying practical opportunities to strengthen approaches, processes and outcomes.
Your background is likely to include substantial exposure to credit analysis, financial assessment and risk management, supported by well-developed business judgement and a strategic perspective.

If you can demonstrate your capabilities against the following key criteria, we would love to hear from you:
  • Well-developed knowledge of financial risk management practices.
  • Well-developed knowledge of current regulations, standards and practices in relation to credit risk management.
  • Well-developed analytical skills, especially in relation to financial analysis.
  • Well-developed knowledge of financial markets and financial instruments.
  • Highly developed research and analytical skills.
  • Broad understanding of credit risk principles.
  • Sound strategic planning, delegation and management skills.
  • Digital confidence and curiosity, including the ability to use data, systems and emerging technologies to strengthen risk insights, improve reporting and identify better ways of working.
