Head of Commercial Finance

Overview

The finance leaders who do well in businesses like this one aren't the ones with the best models. They're the ones the operators actually call.
A large privately owned business operating in infrastructure is hiring a Head of Commercial Finance for one of its most significant divisions. It's a substantial operation with a large delivery workforce, long-term commercial contracts and an active growth agenda.

Reporting to the CFO, you'd be the finance lead for that division and the right hand to the operational leader who runs it. Performance, KPIs, divisional P&L, business plans, and a genuine say in where the business goes next. When something in the numbers doesn't look right, you're the one who goes and finds out why rather than flagging it and waiting.

The role

• Own the divisional P&L and balance sheet end to end, with real accountability for margin, tracking and reporting quality
• Partner directly with the divisional leader and the operational leads beneath them, at the level where decisions are actually made
• Build out the operational reporting a contract-driven business runs on: utilisation, productivity, billable hours, and working capital by client and contract
• Contribute to strategy and to growth activity as the division continues to expand
• Lead, mentor and develop the divisional finance team

What we're looking for

• CA or CPA qualified, with a strong commercial and operational finance background
• Experience in a service delivery environment, with large-scale commercial contracts
• A track record of building reporting rather than inheriting it. This business wants better visibility than it has today, and someone who enjoys constructing that
• Someone who reads a room. You'll be in front of executives one hour and out with operational leaders the next, and the same delivery won't work for both
• The confidence to push back, and the judgement to bring a solution when you do
• Responsive, straight-talking and reliable. Trust is the whole job here, and it's built on turning up and following through
