Director of Tax

This isn't a caretaker contract. It's the driving seat of a fast-growing global technology business's Australian tax function — stepping in fast, running the team, and owning everything from BAU compliance through to the big international stuff.

A well-established, global technology business is looking for an experienced Tax Director to step into an Australian tax leadership role immediately on a contract basis. Reporting to the Group Head of Tax, you'll take primary carriage of all things Australian tax — corporate tax, GST, withholding, and broader advisory to the business — while leading a small team and picking up compliance work across several overseas markets.

This is a 4–6 month contract, ideally running through to the end of the year with scope to extend. It needs someone who can hit the ground running and be in seat as soon as possible.

What the role looks like

• Take primary ownership of Australian tax — corporate tax, GST, withholding taxes, and general advisory to the business
• Lead a small team, and step up as second-in-command to the Group Head of Tax when needed
• Support tax compliance across several overseas markets, drawing on broader international tax exposure
• Get involved in global minimum tax and country-by-country reporting obligations, working alongside the team managing the global filing
• Provide input on transfer pricing matters where relevant, alongside a dedicated specialist team
• Work closely with a Big Four advisory firm on return reviews, R&D claims, and more complex technical positions
• Contribute to a fast-moving, increasingly AI-enabled finance function — this business is actively investing in new tools and ways of working
• Bring sound commercial judgement to genuinely ambiguous situations — this role needs someone comfortable operating in the grey

What you'll need

• 15+ years' tax experience, ideally with a strong Australian corporate tax background
• A track record of operating both commercially and technically — someone who can drive outcomes, not just advise on them
• A hands-on mentality — happy to roll up your sleeves on the detail as well as manage up and across the business
• Exposure to international tax matters; familiarity with concepts like global minimum tax or country-by-country reporting is a genuine advantage
• Prior people leadership experience is helpful, though strong technical specialists with sound judgement will also be considered
• Comfortable working across multiple time zones and with a distributed team
• Genuine openness to AI-enabled ways of working
• Experience in fast-paced, high-growth environments — this is not a slow-moving corporate
