An outstanding opportunity is available for an experienced medical specialist to assume a senior clinical leadership position with a major regional health service in Bendigo, Victoria.

The Clinical Director will provide strategic, clinical and professional leadership across Geriatric Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine and Palliative Care Medicine. Applications are welcomed from appropriately qualified specialists across all medical specialties who possess substantial senior clinical and medical leadership experience.

This ongoing appointment may be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis. Clinical Director duties will comprise approximately 50% of the successful applicant’s employment, with the remaining 50% allocated to clinical practice within the applicant’s specialty, subject to negotiation.

The Role

Reporting operationally to a senior divisional executive and professionally to the Chief Medical Officer, the Clinical Director will lead the effective delivery and ongoing development of geriatric, rehabilitation and palliative care services.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Providing strategic and clinical leadership across the directorate
  • Supporting safe, high-quality and person-centred patient care
  • Leading service planning, development and improvement initiatives
  • Promoting effective clinical governance and risk management
  • Supporting workforce planning, recruitment and professional development
  • Overseeing the efficient operation of inpatient, outpatient and community services
  • Contributing to financial management, funding strategy and budgetary performance
  • Developing effective relationships across medical, nursing, allied health and executive teams
  • Encouraging education, research, innovation and continuous improvement
  • Providing professional leadership, mentorship and support to medical staff
  • Maintaining an agreed clinical practice within the successful applicant’s specialty
The Directorate The directorate encompasses:
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Palliative Care Medicine
The multidisciplinary team includes geriatricians, rehabilitation physicians, palliative care physicians, registrars, junior doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. Services are delivered across inpatient, outpatient, community and home-based settings.

The wider division provides a broad range of person-centred services, including aged-care assessment, community nursing, chronic-disease management, outpatient rehabilitation, transition-to-home support, diabetes care, community allied health and geriatric assessment and management.

Essential Requirements

Applicants must possess:
  • A medical qualification recognised in Australia
  • Fellowship of an appropriate Australian specialist medical college, or an equivalent specialist qualification
  • Full and unconditional specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
  • Substantial clinical experience at senior specialist level
  • Demonstrated experience in senior medical leadership
  • A strong understanding of clinical governance, quality and patient safety
  • Knowledge of healthcare funding, financial management and budgetary processes
  • Proven ability to lead and develop multidisciplinary clinical services
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder-management skills
  • Experience supporting the operation of busy inpatient and outpatient services
  • The ability to meet all occupational health and immunisation requirements, including the 2026 influenza vaccination
