Development Engineer
Western Downs Regional Council | $107K–$114K + Super | 9-Day Fortnight

Looking for a Development Engineering role where you can do interesting technical work without sacrificing your work-life balance?

Public Sector People are partnering with Western Downs Regional Council to appoint a Development Engineer to join its planning and development function.

This is a broad, hands-on role where you’ll work across subdivisions, operational works, roads, stormwater, flooding and infrastructure planning while helping shape practical development outcomes across a growing regional community.
Importantly, this isn’t an environment where you’ll be buried under an unmanageable DA workload. You’ll join a supportive team with approximately 6–10 DAs per week across the team, alongside a 9-day fortnight and flexible working arrangements.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Principal Planner, you’ll provide engineering input throughout the development assessment process, working closely with planners, developers, consultants, internal engineering teams and the wider community.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Assessing development applications and Operational Works
  • Reviewing engineering designs and technical reports across stormwater, flooding and traffic
  • Providing practical engineering advice on subdivisions and development proposals
  • Undertaking site inspections and monitoring compliance with approvals and standards
  • Supporting pre-lodgement discussions with developers and consultants
  • Contributing to infrastructure planning, policy and LGIP matters
  • Working collaboratively to resolve technical issues and achieve sensible development outcomes

It’s a varied position where you’ll have the opportunity to influence projects from the early planning stages through to delivery.

About You

We’re looking for a practical and solutions-focused Civil Engineer who can balance good engineering with the realities of development, planning and stakeholder expectations.

You’ll ideally bring:
  • A Degree in Civil Engineering – mandatory
  • Development engineering experience across subdivisions and civil infrastructure
  • Knowledge of development assessment and relevant planning legislation
  • Ability to assess stormwater, flooding, traffic and broader civil engineering matters
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence working with developers, consultants and internal stakeholders
  • A collaborative and pragmatic approach to problem solving

RPEQ or progress towards RPEQ is highly regarded, as is previous experience within local government or a consultancy working with councils.

Why Western Downs?

This is an opportunity to step into a council offering the combination that can be difficult to find in Development Engineering: interesting work, autonomy, flexibility and a genuinely manageable workload.

You’ll benefit from a 9-day fortnight, flexible working arrangements and work-from-home options where practical, while working within a stable and supportive team.

For someone looking to move away from the pressures of a high-volume metropolitan DA environment—or an engineer wanting broader exposure and greater influence over development outcomes—this represents a strong long-term opportunity.
