ABOUT THE TEAM & WORKPLACE
The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine at Counties Manukau Health serves a vibrant and culturally diverse population of over 600,000 people across East and South Auckland. Guided by the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, they are committed to equity and strive to build a workforce that reflects the communities they care for.
The department provides around 32,000 anaesthetic episodes annually, covering a wide range of services. The team supports both local and regional tertiary-level care. Counties Manukau is home to the National Burns Centre and receives complex referrals for acute spinal injuries, mangled limb trauma, plastic and maxillofacial surgery, hand surgery, and rigid bronchoscopy. They also deliver general surgery, vascular, orthopaedics, urology, ENT, ophthalmology, gynaecology, burns, and plastics to the local community.
Additionally, they provide anaesthetic care for low-complexity paediatrics and are a tertiary obstetric centre, with over 7,000 births per year.
Anaesthetists at Counties Manukau Health work across both major surgical sites:
The team also provide anaesthesia for non-theatre procedures including MRI, CT, interventional radiology, gastroenterology and respiratory procedures, and pacemaker insertions in the cardiac cath lab. Services extend to acute and complex pain management, as well as an active and growing outpatient chronic pain service.
The department fosters a supportive and collaborative environment with a strong culture of quality improvement and professional development. They hold weekly M&M meetings, run a robust internal education programme, and participate in the ANZCA Clinical Trials Network. Many of the SMOs are involved in ANZCA as examiners, committee members, and supervisors of training. With 35 anaesthesia trainees, they are a recognised training site and a key contributor to the future of the specialty.

- Middlemore Hospital– A busy 800-bed tertiary teaching hospital with 14 operating theatres.
- Manukau Surgical Centre (Manukau Health Park)– Located 8km away, offering 10 theatres for short-stay, lower-complexity procedures, with 4 more theatres under construction. This site also includes a 60-bed post-surgical ward, an Anaesthetic Pre-Assessment Clinic, and a four-bed Anaesthetic-led Perioperative Care Unit with 2:1 nursing.

- Hold FANZCA or equivalent and be vocationally registered or be eligible for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

- Be ready and willing to participate in departmental administrative, quality assurance and educational activities.
