Commercial Accountant

The Opportunity
You’re a commercially minded accountant who likes variety and ownership. You want a role where the work stretches across month-end, cashflow, tax and fixed assets – and where you still have time to sit with managers and make the numbers useful.
Based in Christchurch and reporting to the Group Finance Manager, you’ll look after the accounting for a subsidy and a related group entity, while supporting cashflow and banking across both New Zealand and Australia. One day you’re reconciling banks and intercompany balances; the next you’re preparing management accounts, working through tax returns, or talking a budget holder through their expenses.   If you enjoy being useful to the wider business – not just closing the books – you’ll get a lot from this one.

The Role
You’ll work alongside finance business partners, a New Zealand financial accountant, management accountants and the AP/AR team, with regular contact across logistics, regional managers and the dealer network.
The Role You’ll own the commercial accounting for the Australian operation and a related group entity, and support the wider finance team across New Zealand and Australia. Key responsibilities include:

• Prepare monthly management accounts and analysis, complete balance sheet reconciliations, and keep daily bank and intercompany balances accurate
• Manage daily cashflow and banking across New Zealand and Australian accounts, and assist with cashflow forecasting
• Lead group fixed asset accounting – monthly depreciation, additions and disposals – and support year-end stocktakes and audit
• Own tax compliance (BAS, GST, FBT and PAYG instalments) 
• Partner with budget holders on monthly expense analysis and commentary, and support annual budgets, forecasts and commercial decision-making
• Act as a key contact for wholesale and related-entity year-end and audit; support import provisions, FX contracts, WIP and open purchase order reviews, lease accounting and equipment finance subsidy claims

Your Profile
You’re organised, accurate and commercially curious – someone managers are happy to call. You’ll bring:

• Completed tertiary study in accounting or finance, plus at least three years’ experience in a commercial finance team of meaningful size
• Hands-on experience with month-end reporting, bank reconciliations, tax compliance, purchase orders and transactional accounting; payroll exposure is useful
• Confident Microsoft Excel (and Word) skills, with experience in an ERP or similar business system an advantage
