COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR
Manchester / UK-wide | £80,000–£90,000 + Benefits | Flexible Location

Lead commercial strategy. Drive profitable growth. Shape the next phase of an ambitious engineering business.
Are you an experienced Commercial Director, Sales Director or senior commercial leader with a proven track record of delivering profitable growth within a technically led B2B environment?

Are you looking for a role where you can genuinely influence commercial strategy, people, markets and long-term business growth?
We are working with an established and growing technical engineering and solutions business that is looking to appoint a Commercial Director to lead its commercial function and drive the next stage of its development.
This is a senior leadership position with responsibility for translating the company's strategic vision into sustainable commercial performance across the UK.
The role can be based flexibly, with Manchester the preferred location, and will involve national travel as required.

THE ROLE
As Commercial Director, you will take ownership of the company's commercial strategy and performance, leading the sales operation while working closely with the wider senior leadership team.
You'll be responsible for developing a more structured, accountable and scalable commercial organisation — improving forecasting, pipeline management and sales effectiveness while identifying new markets and opportunities for growth.
A key element of the role will be balancing the continued growth of established revenue streams with the development of higher-value engineered solutions and recurring service opportunities.
This is not simply a sales management position.
You'll have the opportunity to influence the wider direction of the business and play a significant role in building its long-term commercial value.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and implement the overall commercial strategy.
  • Translate business objectives into clear commercial targets, priorities and measurable outcomes.
  • Lead annual sales planning, budgeting and forecasting.
  • Establish a disciplined commercial operating rhythm around performance, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Lead, coach and develop the sales team.
  • Improve quote conversion, account development and customer retention.
  • Drive structured key account planning and win-back activity.
  • Strengthen CRM discipline, pipeline visibility and forecasting accuracy.
  • Identify and develop new markets, sectors and commercial opportunities.
  • Build strong strategic relationships with customers, contractors and other key stakeholders.
  • Develop opportunities for higher-value technical and engineered solutions.
  • Grow recurring service, maintenance and lifecycle revenues.
  • Monitor revenue, margin and overall commercial profitability.
  • Chair regular commercial performance reviews and establish meaningful KPIs.
  • Support recruitment, succession planning and the development of a high-performing commercial team.
  • Work closely with engineering, finance, project and operational teams to maximise commercial performance.
  • Contribute to wider strategic planning, investment decisions and Board-level reporting.
  • Support initiatives designed to strengthen the long-term value of the business.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We're looking for an experienced commercial leader who combines strategic thinking with strong commercial execution.
You'll ideally have:
  • Senior commercial leadership or sales leadership experience.
  • A proven track record of delivering profitable growth within a technical B2B environment.
  • Experience within engineering, industrial, manufacturing, process equipment, pumps or a related technical sector.
  • Strong experience developing and implementing commercial strategy.
  • Proven ability to lead, coach and develop sales teams.
  • Strong forecasting, CRM, pipeline and financial planning capability.
  • A strong understanding of revenue, margin and profitability.
  • Experience developing new markets and strategic customer relationships.
  • The ability to operate at both strategic and operational levels.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
  • A visible, engaging and accountable leadership style.
  • The resilience and adaptability to operate within a growing and evolving business.
A degree or equivalent professional qualification in Business, Engineering or a related discipline would be desirable, although commercial track record and leadership capability are more important.

YOUR IMPACT
This role is about more than simply increasing sales.
You'll be joining the senior leadership team at an important stage of the company's development and will have the opportunity to shape the commercial strategy, develop the team, open new markets and create new revenue streams.
The successful candidate will have genuine scope to influence how the business grows and how its commercial operation develops over the coming years.

YOUR FIRST 12 MONTHS
Success will include:
  • Embedding a clear and effective commercial structure.
  • Improving forecasting, CRM and pipeline discipline.
  • Increasing growth across agreed target markets and sectors.
  • Building the pipeline for higher-value engineered solutions.
  • Increasing recurring service and lifecycle revenues.
  • Strengthening strategic customer and supplier relationships.
  • Developing a high-performing and accountable commercial team.
  • Creating a stronger platform for sustainable, profitable growth.

WHAT'S ON OFFER?
£80,000–£90,000 basic salary + benefits
  • Senior leadership position.
  • UK-wide commercial responsibility.
  • Flexible location, with Manchester preferred.
  • Opportunity to shape commercial strategy and business growth.
  • Genuine influence at senior leadership level.
  • Opportunity to develop and build a high-performing commercial function.
  • National customer and market exposure.
