Bereavement Care Team Leader

Make a genuine difference to families when they need it most.

MAYDAY Recruitment is proud to partner with a well-established and highly regarded funeral services organisation to recruit a Bereavement Care Team Leader based in Geelong.

This is a unique opportunity for someone who is empathetic, compassionate and community-minded, with the ability to build genuine rapport with people during an incredibly important time in their lives.

You don't need to be a counsellor or grief therapist. What matters most is your ability to listen, connect, identify when someone may need additional support and confidently link families with the right services and resources.

What's on Offer?

  •

  • 4 days per week - flexible across Monday–Friday

  • Kilometre allowance for approved travel, access to fleet vehicles

  • Full uniform provided

  • Geelong West location

  • Comprehensive one-on-one training and support

  • Opportunity to help shape and develop the bereavement care function

  • Work within a purpose-driven organisation where your contribution has a direct impact on families

  • Supportive team environment with experienced funeral service professionals

This is an on-site, community-based position and you will be required to travel locally, attend community activities and occasionally attend funerals and other services.

About the Role

As Bereavement Care Team Leader, you will lead and shape an important aftercare service supporting families in the weeks and months following a funeral.

You'll provide proactive follow-up to every family, helping them navigate grief, understand the support available and feel connected rather than alone.

You'll also have the opportunity to help redesign and develop the bereavement care function, working closely with the existing team to build a service that genuinely meets the needs of the local community.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting compassionate follow-up calls with families approximately six weeks after a funeral

  • Checking in on how individuals and families are managing and identifying those who may benefit from additional support

  • Providing information and education around grief and bereavement

  • Connecting families with appropriate community services, practitioners, support groups and other specialist organisations

  • Maintaining regular contact with families, including follow-up ahead of significant dates such as anniversaries

  • Building relationships with community organisations, grief practitioners and other operators within the bereavement space

  • Keeping up to date with available community resources and understanding what support is accessible locally

  • Maintaining accurate and personalised records of conversations and follow-up activity within the CRM

  • Responding to families who reconnect with questions or concerns about their aftercare experience

  • Leading and supporting a small team of two casual team members, ensuring a consistent and compassionate approach

  • Working closely with funeral service teams, crematoriums and community stakeholders

  • Participating in selected funeral service activities, including attending funerals and gaining an understanding of funeral service delivery and transfers

This is a role with purpose

This position is about much more than making a follow-up phone call.

You'll be helping families understand that support doesn't end when the funeral does.

You'll have the opportunity to build relationships, create meaningful programs and connect people with the right support at a time when they may not know where to turn.

About You

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Warm, empathetic and naturally compassionate

  • Comfortable having sensitive and sometimes difficult conversations

  • Confident building rapport with people from all walks of life

  • A strong listener who knows when to provide guidance and when to simply be present

  • Community-minded and interested in connecting people with support

  • Self-driven, organised and comfortable working independently

  • Confident coordinating and delegating to a small team

  • Comfortable working with community organisations and external service providers

  • A genuine team player who is willing to get involved across the broader funeral service

You may come from a background in community engagement, aged care, nursing, teaching, chaplaincy, social services, support work, customer care, community services or another people-focused environment.

Most importantly, you'll bring emotional maturity, compassion and a genuine desire to help people.

If you're looking for a role where your ability to connect with people, show compassion and make a genuine difference is valued every day, we'd love to hear from you.
