Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Clinical Nurse Manager II – Nurse Manager on Duty to provide visible clinical and operational leadership across an acute hospital environment. The successful candidate will play a central role in supporting safe patient care, effective patient flow, staffing coordination, service continuity, and the timely escalation of clinical and operational issues.
Acting as a senior point of contact for nursing and frontline teams, the post holder will ensure that professional standards, patient safety, risk management, and operational oversight are maintained at all times while promoting dignity, compassion, and respect.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Operational Leadership

Provide senior nursing and operational oversight across the hospital during assigned shifts.

Act as the designated senior nurse in the absence of senior nursing management where required.

Maintain a visible presence across clinical areas, offering guidance and support to frontline staff.

Coordinate patient flow, admissions, discharges, bed management, and service continuity.

Support staffing deployment decisions and escalate service pressures appropriately.

Ensure compliance with hospital policies, clinical protocols, and professional standards.

Respond effectively to urgent clinical and operational issues arising during the shift.
Escalation, Communication & Coordination
-
Act as a key escalation point for clinical and operational concerns.

Assess risks, take immediate action within scope, and escalate to appropriate personnel as required.

Ensure timely escalation of patient deterioration, safeguarding concerns, staffing deficits, incidents, infrastructure failures, and complaints.

Maintain effective communication with nursing, medical, allied health, administration, and support services.

Provide clear and comprehensive handovers to incoming teams and senior management.

Identify and communicate recurring operational or administrative issues that may impact patient care.
Quality, Safety & Risk Management
-
Support the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care across all clinical areas.

Monitor compliance with infection prevention, medication management, documentation, and environmental safety standards.

Manage incidents, near misses, and service disruptions in line with organisational policy.

Ensure adherence to HIQA, NMBI, health and safety, fire safety, and governance requirements.

Promote a culture of accountability, learning, and continuous improvement.
Team Support & Professional Practice
-
Provide coaching and practical support to nursing and multidisciplinary colleagues.

Support effective teamwork and collaborative working relationships across the hospital.

Contribute to service improvement initiatives and quality reviews.
-
Participate in audits, training programmes, policy implementation, and governance activities.
-
Maintain professional competence and mandatory training relevant to the role.
Essential Requirements
Qualifications & Registration
-
Current registration as a General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), or eligibility for registration.
-
Minimum of five years’ post-registration nursing experience in an acute hospital setting.

Minimum of two years’ recent nursing management or supervisory experience, ideally at CNM 1 level or equivalent.

Demonstrated ability to oversee hospital operations and nursing services during periods of reduced senior management presence.

Experience managing clinical risk, incidents, patient flow, staffing issues, and operational escalation.

Knowledge of HIQA standards, NMBI requirements, infection prevention and control, health and safety, and quality governance.

Strong decision-making skills and ability to remain composed in a fast-paced environment.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and coordination skills.

Commitment to patient-centred care, professional standards, service improvement, and continuous learning.

A relevant management or leadership qualification is desirable, or willingness to undertake one.
