Apply directData Specialist – Microsoft Data & Analytics
Brisbane | Permanent | $120,000 – $140,000 + Super
Join a growing Australian organisation and take ownership of a modern data environment as it moves into its next stage of maturity.
Our client is a large, privately owned Australian business with a significant national footprint and operations across multiple locations. Over the past 12 months, they have invested heavily in establishing a modern Microsoft data platform. With the foundations now in place, they are looking for an experienced Data Specialist to help build trusted, scalable data models and unlock greater value from data across the organisation.
This is not a traditional reporting or dashboard-focused position. The role is approximately 70–80% data, modelling and problem-solving, with Power BI and reporting making up the balance.
The Role
Working closely with the Group Manager – Data & Analytics, you will operate across the data lifecycle and take ownership of complex data challenges.
You will work with data coming from multiple operational, financial, customer and business systems, bringing different structures and definitions together into consistent and trusted enterprise datasets.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Designing dimensional models, star schemas, facts and dimensions
- Building and maintaining trusted semantic models for enterprise reporting
- Developing complex SQL queries, transformations and reusable data structures
- Integrating and standardising data from multiple source systems
- Investigating data discrepancies and reconciling conflicting numbers across systems and reports
- Working with historical data and differing source-system structures
- Developing and supporting ingestion and transformation pipelines
- Improving query, model and reporting performance
- Building reusable datasets rather than report-specific solutions
- Developing Power BI reports and DAX where required
- Supporting source control, testing, DevOps and CI/CD practices
- Working directly with business SMEs to understand how underlying systems and data behave
The environment is predominantly Microsoft and includes Microsoft Fabric, OneLake, Data Warehouse, Azure Data Factory, SQL, Power BI/DAX and Azure DevOps.
About You
We're looking for someone who is technically strong but, equally importantly, curious and investigative.
You'll be comfortable questioning requirements, challenging assumptions and independently working through complex data problems. If two systems produce different numbers, you'll want to understand why rather than simply changing the report.
Ideally, you will bring:
- Advanced SQL development and query optimisation skills
- Strong dimensional and semantic modelling experience
- Excellent understanding of star schemas, facts, dimensions and data grain
- Experience integrating complex data from multiple source systems
- Strong data reconciliation, validation and data-quality capability
- Power BI experience, including semantic models and DAX
- Experience with modern data warehouse or lakehouse environments
- Understanding of ETL/ELT and data pipeline orchestration
- Exposure to Git, DevOps and structured deployment practices
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Data Vault, Python/PySpark or Azure DevOps would be advantageous, but we won't overlook an excellent data modeller simply because you've worked with another modern platform such as Databricks or Snowflake.
Experience within retail, automotive, FMCG or another multi-site/multi-entity organisation would also be highly regarded.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is an opportunity to join an organisation where the core architecture has been established, but there is still significant scope to influence how the data capability develops.
You'll have genuine ownership, work across a diverse national business and see the direct impact of the solutions you build. Rather than being confined to one narrow part of the data stack, you'll have the opportunity to work across engineering, modelling, semantic layers, data quality and reporting.
For someone who enjoys solving difficult data problems and wants to help build a trusted enterprise data capability over the long term, this is an excellent opportunity.
