2027 UUSA Chemistry Intern

We’re looking for motivated students to be part of a dynamic 11-week paid internship where you’ll work on impactful projects and gain real-world experience, all while supporting our mission to improve health and improve lives.

Chosen candidate will work with mentors on real projects that directly impact UUSA’s enrichment and Net Zero initiative. They will also gain hands-on experience in materials synthesis, materials characterization, materials processing, analytical chemistry, actinide materials science, optical materials science, electrochemistry, materials engineering, materials chemistry, and physics. The internship program will provide you with real-world, applied experience solving important problems within our stimulating work environment.

Program Summary

Compensation

• Paid Internship $21/hour paid bi-weekly

Candidate Requirements / Eligibility

• Must be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university pursuing a 4 year degree in Chemistry
• 2 years of college courses completed
• Able to work ALL 11 weeks (May through August) of the internship program
• Work Schedule: Professional work schedule/M-F 9/80 work schedule
• Security Clearance Requirement: CAA Access
• Work Environment: General Office. This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets etc.
• Responsible for the protection of confidential and proprietary information received during employment, including keeping information in strict confidence, exercising a reasonable degree of care to prevent disclosure to others, not disclosing or divulging either directly or indirectly information to others, and not using the information commercially or for any other purpose other than the performance of their duties for Urenco. Confidential information includes information and data of any kind concerning any matters affecting or relating to Urenco business or operations, including compensation, investigations, financial controls, etc.

Essential Functions

• Responsible for support of daily chemistry laboratory operations, environmental monitoring and radiological measurements.
• Provides analytical support in the production of enriched UF6; participates in activities in the operation of chemical and environmental processes and technologies.
• Supports programs for the effective monitoring and trending, and interfacing with other URENCO USA departments to ensure efficient coordination of their activities regarding chemistry and environmental monitoring.
• Perform cross-functional duties of the department employing sound scientific practices to minimize the contamination and the generation of hazardous and radioactive waste.
• Ensures all work is performed in a manner that the radiation dose is “as low as reasonably achievable” (ALARA).
• Operate the mass spectrometers and other chemical and radiological laboratory equipment, including calibration and quality control measurements.
• Collects site and environmental gaseous, liquid and solid samples and performs chemical and radionuclide analysis of those samples, and assures the minimization of contamination and generation of hazardous and radioactive waste in the laboratory.
• Support preparation of reports for chemical analyses of UF6 production, survey, and personnel monitoring programs, maintains an effective record file system, keeps the laboratory contamination log, and implements the timely transfer of document test results and forms as required by procedure.
