JOB TITLE: Substation Commissioning Manager

LOCATION: Remote

SCHEDULE: Standard Office Hours

DURATION: 12-Month Contract

PAY: $109-114/hour



Job Responsibilities:

In this role, you will represent the project owner by leading commissioning, startup, and operational turnover activities for a portfolio of renewable energy projects, including wind, solar, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing all commissioning and startup activities while ensuring adherence to company safety standards and quality expectations.
  • Coordinating and overseeing EPC contractors, OEM startup personnel, third-party commissioning teams, and operations staff throughout project commissioning.
  • Driving successful project turnover by ensuring facilities achieve reliable operation with minimal downtime during initial startup.
  • Ensuring compliance with project contractual requirements, including Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and Large Generator Interconnect Agreement (LGIA) deliverables.
  • Collaborating with Transmission Operators and Independent System Operators (ISOs) to meet project energization milestones and commercial operation schedules.
  • Managing onsite commissioning personnel and serving as the primary point of contact for commissioning activities.
  • Partnering with engineering, safety, quality, and construction teams to ensure successful project execution.

Essential Duties and Job Functions:

  • Lead commissioning, startup, and operational turnover activities for assigned renewable energy projects.
  • Ensure all commissioning work is completed safely and in compliance with company policies and industry standards.
  • Coordinate daily activities between EPC contractors, OEM representatives, third-party contractors, and operations personnel.
  • Monitor project readiness and commissioning progress while providing regular status and progress reports.
  • Review electrical drawings and perform quality control inspections to ensure installation accuracy.
  • Support SCADA integration, testing, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Oversee electrical, instrumentation, and controls (E&I) installation, startup, and troubleshooting.
  • Support protection and control system implementation, testing, and issue resolution.
  • Verify compliance with contractual commissioning requirements and utility interconnection obligations.
  • Coordinate with utilities, transmission operators, and ISOs to facilitate energization and grid synchronization.
  • Manage third-party vendors, suppliers, and onsite commissioning personnel throughout project execution.
  • Perform additional commissioning and project support duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of electrical construction and commissioning methods and best practices.
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA, and applicable electrical safety standards.
  • Experience with SCADA systems integration and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with electrical, instrumentation, and controls (E&I) systems.
  • Knowledge of protection and control systems implementation and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to review engineering drawings and perform quality control inspections.
  • Strong project scheduling, planning, and progress reporting skills.
  • Experience managing contractors, suppliers, and cross-functional project teams.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF editing software, and document control systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and project execution.

Education & Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of onsite experience supporting renewable energy construction, startup, and commissioning projects.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working for an EPC contractor on renewable energy projects.
  • Proven experience commissioning renewable energy facilities, including wind, solar, and/or battery energy storage projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, construction, operations, and project management teams.
  • Strong technical background with the ability to resolve complex engineering and constructability issues.
  • Proven ability to successfully oversee multiple projects and priorities concurrently.
