The organisation
Calvary is a not-for-profit Catholic healthcare organisation dedicated to providing compassionate care to the most vulnerable in our communities. Established in 1885 by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, Calvary has grown into a national network of hospitals, residential care and retirement communities and community care services across Australia.

Guided by its mission of “being for others”, Calvary embodies the values of hospitality, healing, stewardship and respect and remains committed to providing high-quality, inclusive care that supports the dignity and wellbeing of every person it serves.

The opportunity
Reporting to the Regional Chief Operations Officer – Hospitals, the General Manager will lead Calvary Adelaide Hospital, South Australia’s largest private hospital and the flagship of Calvary’s private hospital network.

Purpose-built in the heart of Adelaide and designed by clinicians to maximise the patient experience, Calvary Adelaide is a 344-bed tertiary hospital delivering one of South Australia's broadest ranges of complex medical and surgical services. The hospital cares for more than 27,000 patients each year across a comprehensive portfolio of acute, critical care and specialist services.

Its clinical capability is underpinned by a large, high-acuity Intensive Care Unit, a 24-hour Emergency Department, advanced operating theatre capability, a unique hybrid theatre and significant investment in robotic-assisted surgery across both orthopaedic and soft tissue specialties. Together with a highly engaged medical community and exceptional multidisciplinary workforce, these capabilities position Calvary Adelaide at the forefront of contemporary private healthcare.

Behind this capability is a highly engaged and respected medical community, an exceptional multidisciplinary workforce of more than 1,500 people and an established executive team. Together, they provide the incoming General Manager with an outstanding platform from which to advance clinical services, pursue innovation and shape the hospital’s next phase of growth.

The General Manager will provide strategic and operational leadership across the hospital’s clinical, financial, workforce and service performance. They will translate Calvary’s strategic priorities into action, deepen partnerships with Visiting Medical Officers (VMOs) and clinical leaders and position Calvary Adelaide to respond to emerging opportunities in a dynamic private healthcare market.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Setting and executing the hospital’s strategic direction in alignment with Calvary’s national priorities
  • Leading and developing the hospital executive team and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement
  • Advancing clinical innovation, service development and sustainable growth across the hospital’s tertiary specialties
  • Building strong partnerships with VMOs, supporting clinician recruitment and strengthening the hospital’s medical community
  • Delivering agreed clinical, operational, financial, workforce and service performance objectives
  • Maintaining effective clinical governance, accreditation, quality, safety and risk frameworks
  • Driving operational excellence across patient flow, theatre utilisation, workforce productivity and service delivery
  • Developing workforce capability, engagement and succession across clinical and operational teams
  • Representing Calvary with government, health services, regulators, health funds, tertiary institutions and the broader community
This is a rare opportunity to lead a flagship tertiary private hospital with the reputation, clinical capability and organisational platform to shape the future of private healthcare in South Australia.
