The organisation
The Royal Flying Doctor Service South Eastern Section (RFDSSE) is one of Australia's most trusted and recognised healthcare organisations, delivering life-saving aeromedical retrievals and essential healthcare services to people living and working across rural, regional and remote New South Wales.
Retrieval and emergency medicine sits at the heart of RFDSSE's mission. Operating across a complex statewide network, the service delivers primary evacuations, inter-hospital transfers, 24/7 emergency telehealth support, remote medical advice and non-emergency patient transport, working closely with NSW Ambulance, Local Health Districts and other health partners to ensure patients receive timely, high-quality care wherever they are.
The opportunity
This is a rare opportunity to lead one of Australia's most respected aeromedical services through its next phase of evolution. Reporting to the Executive General Manager Health and Clinical Services / Chief Medical Officer, you will provide strategic, clinical and operational leadership across RFDSSE's Aeromedical and Emergency Services, leading a multidisciplinary medical workforce delivering retrieval and prehospital care across rural and remote New South Wales.
A key priority will be leading the transition to a visible, consultant-led retrieval service. You will strengthen clinical leadership across the organisation by increasing the presence, accessibility and influence of senior clinicians, ensuring consultants play an active role in mentoring, supervision, decision-making and workforce development. Alongside this, you will champion a culture of clinical excellence, continuous improvement and high performance while strengthening governance, quality and patient safety across the service.
Working closely with executive leaders and key stakeholders, you will oversee clinical governance, service innovation, workforce capability, education and training, credentialing and performance. You will lead the development of contemporary retrieval models of care, enhance virtual care and emergency support services, and help position RFDSSE as a national leader in aeromedical education and retrieval medicine.
The role also offers the opportunity to shape healthcare well beyond the organisation. You will build strong partnerships across NSW Ambulance, NSW Health, Local Health Districts, universities, specialist colleges and other aeromedical providers to improve system integration, patient outcomes and the future capability of retrieval medicine across the state.
There is a strong preference for the successful candidate to be based primarily in Dubbo or Broken Hill, where the majority of RFDSSE's retrieval workforce operates. Regular travel between operational bases forms an important part of the role.
About you
You are a specialist medical practitioner with Fellowship of ACEM, CICM, ANZCA, ACRRM or an equivalent specialist college, together with current Specialist Registration with AHPRA. You bring substantial senior experience in aeromedical retrieval, prehospital medicine or critical care, ideally within rural and remote healthcare environments.
Above all, you are an authentic clinical leader who enjoys building high-performing teams. You are passionate about developing clinicians, creating strong learning cultures and supporting consultants, registrars and junior doctors to deliver exceptional patient care. You understand the importance of visible leadership and have the credibility to influence clinical practice while bringing people with you through change.
You have demonstrated success strengthening clinical governance, leading service improvement and building collaborative relationships across complex healthcare systems. You are equally comfortable working alongside executive leaders, operational teams and external stakeholders to improve system performance, while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and clinical excellence.
Why join RFDSSE?
This is an opportunity to influence the future of rural healthcare while enjoying the professional autonomy, lifestyle and sense of purpose that only regional practice can offer.
