Contribute to the strategic direction of the Aboriginal Languages Trust and support NSW Aboriginal communities in the reawakening, revitalisation and growth of Aboriginal Languages, so they can continue to be seen and heard in everyday life.
 
The organisation
The Aboriginal Languages Trust (ALT) is an Aboriginal-led NSW Government agency committed to preserving and strengthening Aboriginal Languages across NSW. Established under the Aboriginal Languages Act 2017, ALT provides a coordinated effort across local, regional and state levels to revitalise, nurture and grow Aboriginal Languages across NSW.

ALT works alongside Aboriginal communities to support their aspirations and self-determining work to reclaim and reawaken Languages. Its functions include promoting and identifying priorities for Language activity, managing funding and investment in Language activity, supporting education and employment opportunities, and promoting the wider use and appreciation of Aboriginal Languages.

The affairs of ALT are managed by an Aboriginal-led Board appointed by the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs. Board members bring the skills, expertise and community standing required to guide the Trust, while balancing the principles of good governance with Aboriginal lore, culture and traditions and ALT’s accountability to Community.

ALT is entering an important next stage in its development, with its 2027–2032 Strategic Plan currently being developed following extensive community consultation across NSW. The Trust is expanding its Board from seven to nine members, strengthening its capability and supporting longer-term Board succession as it looks towards the future.
 
The opportunity
ALT is seeking to appoint two new Board Members who will contribute their experience, perspectives and community connections to the strategic leadership and governance of the Trust.

As a Board Member, you will work collaboratively with the Chair, fellow Board members and ALT leadership to provide strategic advice and direction, support effective governance and decision-making, and ensure the Trust continues to perform its functions in accordance with the Aboriginal Languages Act 2017. Board members also play an important role in representing the Trust, engaging with communities and stakeholders, and participating in the promotion and celebration of Aboriginal Languages across NSW.

These appointments come at an exciting time for ALT as it prepares to commence its next five-year Strategic Plan from July 2027. The new members will join a strong and well-functioning Board and contribute to its longer-term capability, succession planning and diversity of experience.
 
About you
You are a respected and culturally grounded Aboriginal leader with strong standing in community and the ability to contribute broadly, constructively and collaboratively at Board level. You bring previous Board experience, sound judgement and a strong understanding of governance, stewardship and collective decision-making. You are comfortable contributing your own perspectives and expertise while working effectively with others to achieve shared outcomes.

Across the two appointments, ALT is particularly interested in strengthening the Board’s collective capability across strategic leadership, corporate governance, cultural leadership and government relations. Experience in areas such as finance, legal and compliance, grants or investment would also be highly valued and complement the skills and experience of the existing Board.   

Experience within Aboriginal Language networks is desirable but is not essential. Of greater importance is your ability to bring strategic perspective, cultural leadership, strong community connection and a commitment to ALT’s purpose. Candidates from across NSW are encouraged to apply, with geographic representation from Far West NSW, Western NSW and the Far South Coast particularly welcomed.
 
Note that being an Aboriginal person is a genuine occupational qualification for this role under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
