Principal Data Analyst

Brisbane CBD | Queensland Government | Data & Digital Strategy

Make data meaningful. Drive decisions that make a difference.

Are you an experienced Data Analyst with strong expertise in spatial analytics, GIS and data visualisation? This is an opportunity to apply your technical skills to complex, data-driven challenges that help shape government policy, improve digital connectivity and deliver better outcomes for Queensland communities.

Join a collaborative team working across government to turn complex datasets into meaningful insights that inform strategic decisions, infrastructure planning and digital inclusion initiatives.

About the Role

As the Principal Data Analyst, you will lead spatial and non-spatial data analysis, translating complex information into clear, evidence-based insights to support policy development, strategic planning and program delivery.

You will work with diverse datasets, including telecommunications, infrastructure, land and population data, using advanced analytical techniques, mapping and visualisation to identify trends, assess opportunities and provide actionable advice to senior stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead spatial and non-spatial data analysis projects, from scoping and planning through to delivery and reporting.

  • Analyse complex geographical, telecommunications, infrastructure and population datasets to support regional planning and digital connectivity initiatives.

  • Develop and maintain GIS maps, spatial products, dashboards and business intelligence reports to communicate insights effectively.

  • Apply statistical analysis, data modelling and integration techniques to identify trends and answer complex policy and program questions.

  • Champion data governance, data quality, documentation and information management practices.

  • Utilise GIS technologies, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, alongside SQL and Power BI to query, integrate and visualise data.

  • Build strong relationships with government agencies, local councils, infrastructure providers and other key stakeholders.

  • Provide technical guidance, share knowledge and contribute to continuous improvement across data analytics and GIS practices.

About You

You are a technically strong and analytical professional who can combine hands-on data expertise with the ability to influence decisions through clear, evidence-based advice. You enjoy solving complex problems, managing competing priorities and working collaboratively with stakeholders across different disciplines.

To be successful, you will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience in spatial analytics, GIS and broader data analysis, including technical leadership and sound data governance practices.

  • Strong expertise in Esri ArcGIS tools and spatial databases, with the ability to produce accurate maps and meaningful spatial visualisations.

  • Practical experience with SQL, data modelling, data integration and business intelligence tools such as Power BI.

  • Proven ability to collect, cleanse, link and analyse datasets from multiple sources, translating findings into actionable insights, reports and dashboards.

  • Experience delivering analytical projects from initial scoping through to stakeholder engagement, reporting and recommendations.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Experience applying spatial analytics to land use, infrastructure planning or telecommunications projects will be highly regarded. Familiarity with Python or R for geospatial analysis is also advantageous.

A degree in GIS, Spatial Science, Data Analytics or a related discipline, along with relevant industry certifications, would be beneficial but is not mandatory.
