Finance Director, Reinsurance

Lead the finance review of the MGA programs our client writes and renews, and give senior leadership an independent view of whether each one holds up.

  • Industry: Insurance: MGA program business and reinsurance
  • Function: Finance
  • Direct report: Senior Reinsurance Accountant
  • Working model: Hybrid, up to 2 days per week in office

The role

This role provides financial oversight across our client's MGA program business and reinsurance portfolio. You'll lead the finance review of new and existing programs and decide whether each is financially sound, appropriately collateralized, accurately forecast, and consistent with the company's risk appetite and strategic objectives.

Most of the work is cross-functional. You'll work with Finance, Treasury, Underwriting, Reinsurance, Program Management, Risk, Legal, Accounting, Claims, and senior leadership, testing program economics, financial assumptions, collateral sufficiency, profitability, and emerging financial risks, then bringing independent recommendations to executive management. You'll also oversee the preparation and governance of quarterly reinsurance reporting, collateral monitoring, and financial forecasting.

The organization

Our client is an insurance group writing MGA and program business, supported by a reinsurance portfolio and subject to US and international regulatory obligations. Finance confirms a program is financially ready before it launches, and its analysis goes to senior leadership, Risk Committees, Reinsurance Committees, and the Board.

What you'll do

Program evaluation and onboarding

  • Lead the finance workstream for evaluating and onboarding new and renewed MGA and program business.
  • Review program economics: premium projections, commissions, fees, taxes, reinsurance structures, expenses, collateral requirements, profitability, and financial assumptions.
  • Perform financial due diligence on profitability, capital utilization, liquidity, cash flow, collateral exposure, and downside scenarios.
  • Work with Underwriting, Reinsurance, Treasury, Accounting, Program Management, Legal, Risk, FP&A, and Claims to confirm financial readiness before a program launches.

Collateral and counterparty risk

  • Oversee collateral governance, including letters of credit, trust accounts, funds withheld arrangements, recoverables, and collateral sufficiency.
  • Monitor reinsurer financial strength, counterparty credit risk, recoverability, and collateral adequacy, and identify emerging financial risks.

Reporting and governance

  • Prepare and review Schedule F reporting, quarterly reinsurance reporting, collateral reporting, cash flow forecasts, and executive management presentations.
  • Develop executive reporting, dashboards, profitability analysis, and governance materials for senior leadership, Risk Committees, Reinsurance Committees, and the Board.
  • Evaluate financial performance, forecast accuracy, program profitability, and emerging trends, and recommend improvements and corrective actions.
  • Maintain the governance frameworks, documentation standards, financial controls, and finance review processes behind program oversight.

Leadership

  • Supervise and develop the Senior Reinsurance Accountant, who is responsible for quarterly reinsurance reporting, collateral reporting, and forecasting.
  • Give senior leadership strategic financial guidance and independent recommendations on program readiness, collateral exposure, profitability, and financial risk.
  • Keep improving financial reporting, collateral monitoring, forecasting processes, and governance practices.

Regulatory obligations

You'll maintain compliance with every applicable US or international statutory and regulatory obligation the role carries, including those arising from:

  • The prudent management of the business.
  • Due regard for the interests of customers.
  • Rules on sanctions and financial crime.
  • Regulatory requirements and local licensing restrictions.
  • The Group's whistleblowing procedures, which you'll promote and follow, and guide your reports on.
  • Where applicable, the company's Consumer Duty principles, to deliver good outcomes for retail customers.
