Forward Deployed Engineer - NYC
Competitive base, uncapped upside tied to what you ship.
Working for our client, strategists scope and prioritize the bets. Forward Deployed Engineers make them real. You are the engineer who walks into a client codebase and ships the AI workflow that changes how thousands of people do their job.
You work close to the problem and close to the client. Architecture decisions are yours. The code is yours. The credit and the consequences are yours. You partner with Strategists to choose the right bets, with client engineering teams to ship inside their stack, and with the latest agentic coding tools to move at speeds that were not possible a year ago. The bar is production, not demos: what counts is the workflow running on Monday morning when nobody from the company is in the room.
Live engagements, to give a sense of the work:
- Insurance: an agent handling tier-1 claims disputes inside a fifteen-year-old claims platform for a national insurer, cutting resolution time for real policyholders.
- Healthcare: an AI routing layer designed, prototyped with Claude, and rolled out across a three-hospital health system with the client's own engineers.
- Private equity: an agentic copilot over every portfolio company, built v1 to production by a single FDE and iterated with the team that uses it daily.
What you'll do:
- Own features end to end: architecture, implementation, deploy, and the relationship with client engineer reviewing your PR. Nothing gets handed off.
- Use every agentic coding tool that gives you leverage: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, whatever ships next week. Your throughput is measured and your pay scales with it.
- Ramp into unfamiliar codebases, from Fortune 500 monoliths in languages you have not touched in years to stacks built last quarter, without hand holding.
- Design agent systems that are reliable, auditable, and keep humans in the loop where they belong.
- Make the team better: workflow refinements from one engagement get adopted across every other engagement, so individual wins compound firm-wide.
What you MUST bring:
- 3 to 8 years building and shipping production software end to end, with a track record of turning complex problems into clean, scalable systems.
- AI as a core part of how you work: agentic coding tools raise the quality and throughput of everything you ship.
- Intellectual curiosity and range: you track new models, tools, and techniques and bring what you learn back to the team.
- Operational discipline: parallel workstreams across multiple clients without losing clarity or quality.
- Collaborative rigor: high standards for yourself and others, active contribution to team knowledge.
- Bonus: public artifacts (open source, a side project people use, a talk or post on applied AI engineering) and experience shipping a production agentic system end to end, not a POC.
Compensation, Benefits & Logistics
- $180k upwards with quarterly bonus. Structure: guaranteed base plus uncapped quarterly cash variable tied directly to output (typically $10k to $15k, much higher for top performers.
- Benefits: comprehensive medical (PPO and HSA options), dental, vision, HSA and FSA, commuter benefits, 100% employer-paid life and AD&D, 100% employer-paid long-term disability, and responsible PTO.
- Workplace: in person from the NYC office five days a week, with travel to client sites roughly monthly. No relocation package, but non-local candidates willing to move to NYC are welcome.
