Position Details
Position Summary
- Works under the school principal
- Implements district-approved special education curriculum
- Supports students with disabilities based on their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Helps students access the general education classroom and succeed academically and socially
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Support
- Provide specialized instruction based on each student’s IEP
- Modify lessons and use differentiated teaching strategies
- Support academics, behavior, social-emotional skills, and daily living skills
IEP & Compliance
- Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs
- Ensure compliance with state and federal special education laws
- Track student progress and adjust instruction as needed
Classroom Environment
- Create a safe, structured, and positive classroom
- Promote respect, inclusion, and collaboration among students
Collaboration
- Work with:
- General education teachers
- Parents/guardians
- Administrators
- Therapists and support staff
- Supervise and guide teaching assistants/paraprofessionals
Additional Duties (Varies by Program)
Depending on the role (resource, behavior support, preschool, etc.), you may:
- Provide behavioral interventions
- Support students with moderate to severe disabilities
- Assist with personal care (toileting, feeding, mobility)
- Use assistive technology or adaptive equipment
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education (or related program)
- South Carolina teaching certification in Special Education
- Knowledge of:
- IEP development
- Special education law and compliance
- Instructional strategies for diverse learners
