Are you an experienced Safety Manager who thrives on building safety culture, influencing behaviours, and creating meaningful change on the ground? This is a unique opportunity to join a large-scale industrial manufacturing operation and play a critical leadership role in shaping the future of workplace safety. Based in the South East of South Australia, this role is ideal for a hands-on safety professional who enjoys balancing operational engagement with strategic reporting and compliance responsibilities.
The Opportunity
Reporting directly to the Site General Manager, you will be a key member of the site leadership team, partnering closely with operational leaders to drive a proactive, behavioural-based safety culture across a complex manufacturing environment employing approximately 270 people. This is a highly visible role requiring someone who can build credibility across all levels of the business, influence positive safety behaviours, and provide practical coaching and support to leaders and employees alike.
The successful candidate will lead a small safety team and be responsible for ensuring compliance, reporting, risk management, training, investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives while maintaining a strong presence on the operational floor.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive and embed a strong behavioural safety culture across the site.
- Coach leaders and employees on safe work practices and risk awareness.
- Lead incident and safety investigations, identifying root causes and corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with WHS legislation, policies, procedures, and company standards.
- Facilitate risk assessments, safety improvement plans, and critical risk management activities.
- Manage safety reporting requirements and ensure accurate, timely reporting through safety management systems.
- Lead and support safety committees, audits, contractor management, and verification activities.
- Develop and deliver safety training and capability-building initiatives.
- Maintain safety and environmental documentation and support the development of operational safety procedures.
- Build strong working relationships across operations, HR, and leadership teams to drive continuous improvement.
About You
To be successful in this position, you will bring:
- Proven experience in a Safety Manager or senior safety leadership role.
- Strong capability in behavioural-based safety, culture change, and workforce engagement.
- Experience working within heavy industrial, manufacturing, processing, construction materials, or similar operational environments.
- The ability to balance operational presence with reporting, compliance, and administrative responsibilities.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication, coaching, and influencing skills.
- Demonstrated experience managing competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- A Certificate or formal qualification in Occupational Health & Safety.
- Training and Assessing qualifications highly regarded.
- Experience with safety management systems and reporting platforms.
- Strong emotional intelligence, accountability, and conflict resolution skills.
