Registrar -Palliative Care Medicine

An excellent opportunity is available for a Palliative Care Medicine Registrar to join a well-established multidisciplinary service in regional Victoria.

Based in Bendigo, this position offers broad clinical exposure across inpatient, community, acute hospital and regional palliative care services. The successful doctor will provide high-quality, compassionate care to patients and their families under the supervision of experienced Palliative Medicine specialists.

The appointment offers a supportive teaching environment in which to develop specialist knowledge, clinical judgement, communication skills and experience in the management of patients with complex and life-limiting illnesses.

The Position

Depending on the registrar’s previous experience, training requirements and professional objectives, clinical duties may include:

• Inpatient palliative care within a specialist palliative care and evaluation unit
• Community-based palliative care
• Acute hospital consultation-liaison services
• Regional palliative care consultancy
• Telehealth consultations
• Outreach services across the wider region
• Assessment and management of pain and other complex symptoms
• Advance-care planning and end-of-life care
• Communication with patients, families and carers
• Collaboration with community providers and referring clinical teams

The registrar will work closely with palliative care physicians, nursing staff, allied health professionals, junior doctors and community-based services to provide coordinated, person-centred care.

Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will:

• Assess and manage patients with advanced and life-limiting illnesses
• Develop individualised treatment and symptom-management plans
• Support patients and families with sensitive clinical decision-making
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and clinical reviews
• Provide consultation and advice to acute and regional healthcare teams
• Maintain clear and accurate clinical documentation
• Participate in relevant after-hours or on-call duties, where required
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit and quality improvement
• Assist with the supervision and teaching of junior doctors and medical students
• Participate actively in departmental education and professional-development activities

Essential Requirements

Applicants should possess:

• A recognised medical degree
• Current or eligible medical registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency
• Postgraduate clinical experience appropriate for appointment at registrar level
• An interest in Palliative Care Medicine and person-centred care
• Effective clinical assessment and decision-making skills
• Excellent communication, teamwork and interpersonal abilities
• The ability to work sensitively with patients experiencing serious or life-limiting illness and their families
• The ability to meet all occupational health and immunisation requirements, including the 2026 influenza vaccination

Previous experience in palliative care, general medicine, oncology, geriatrics, rehabilitation medicine or a related specialty would be advantageous.
