Biodiversity Net Gain Consultant

Embankment Group is recruiting on behalf of a client seeking a Biodiversity Net Gain Consultant to support the delivery of projects across a varied portfolio. This exciting role offers a balance of field surveys and office-based technical work, with a strong emphasis on preparing Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and long-term habitat management and monitoring plans.

You will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of ecology, landscape, and arboricultural specialists, contributing ecological input from early project stages through to post-development monitoring. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys both fieldwork and technical reporting and is eager to further develop their expertise in Biodiversity Net Gain.


Overview

As a Biodiversity Net Gain Consultant, you will play a pivotal role in supporting a diverse range of development and infrastructure projects. Your responsibilities will span from conducting habitat surveys and preparing Biodiversity Net Gain assessments to producing long-term habitat management and monitoring plans. You will collaborate with internal teams and external consultants, ensuring ecological workstreams are delivered efficiently and to the highest standards.


Responsibilities

  • Supporting the delivery of development and infrastructure projects from feasibility through to post-development monitoring.
  • Conducting habitat surveys using UKHab methodology, including habitat mapping and condition assessments.
  • Preparing Biodiversity Net Gain assessments at feasibility and design stages.
  • Producing site-specific, 30-year habitat management and monitoring plans.
  • Collaborating with internal teams and external consultants across multidisciplinary projects.
  • Providing ecological advice to clients and contributing to workshops or project discussions.
  • Updating technical reports and project documentation in response to design changes or consultee feedback.
  • Ensuring ecological workstreams are delivered efficiently and within project timelines.
  • Supporting wider ecology team activities and survey work as required.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • 1–2 years of experience supporting Biodiversity Net Gain assessments, with familiarity in the Biodiversity Metric and relevant policy.
  • A degree in ecology or a related environmental discipline.
  • Experience conducting ecological field surveys using recognised methodologies and recording survey data.
  • Proficiency in UKHab habitat surveys and condition assessments.
  • Strong technical report writing skills with the ability to present ecological information clearly.
  • Understanding of habitat management principles and long-term habitat monitoring plans.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with colleagues, clients, and consultees.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Flexibility to travel and occasionally work outside standard office hours during survey periods.

Desirable

  • Awareness of UK wildlife legislation and planning policy.
  • Membership, or working towards membership, of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).

Day-to-Day

  • Conducting field-based habitat surveys and mapping using UKHab methodology.
  • Preparing Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and technical reports.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to integrate ecological input into project designs.
  • Producing and updating habitat management and monitoring plans.
  • Advising clients and participating in workshops or project discussions.
  • Supporting the ecology team with additional survey work as needed.
