Technical Applications Lead (Financial Services)

Client Introduction
A financial services firm is hiring a Technical Applications Lead (Financial Services) to lead a critical business applications environment. This is a role for someone who understands how software is built, how live applications are supported, and how to lead both internal teams and external delivery partners in a practical, hands-on way from a management perspective. The role combines application delivery, production support, service governance, and longer-term application ownership. It does not require coding day to day.
 
Job Responsibilities

• Lead the team responsible for keeping a portfolio of core business applications reliable, supported, and fit for change
• Own the application portfolio - set direction on what to enhance, modernise, replace, build internally, or source externally, and shape the roadmap with the business
• Guide the team on sound development practices, structured delivery, and sensible technical decisions
• Oversee both enhancement work and day-to-day production support across in-house and outsourced resources
• Take ownership of major incidents, recurring problems, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions across the application environment
• Oversee application service quality, support performance, resilience, and ongoing improvement
• Work with business users to turn operational needs into workable application solutions
• Coordinate external developers, application vendors, and support resources to ensure delivery quality and accountability
• Bring structure, ownership, and technical judgement to how applications are run and evolved

 
Job Requirements

• Proven experience leading an applications or software team in a technical management capacity
• Must have a real development background, even if no longer coding day to day
• Strong understanding of software engineering principles, application change delivery, and production support
• Experience managing live application environments, including incident and problem management, release and change governance, and service improvement
• Strong experience leading major incidents, root-cause analysis, problem management, and follow-through on corrective actions
• Comfortable owning a broad application portfolio, rather than only a single product or development stream
• Experience contributing to application roadmap, sourcing, modernisation, and build-versus-buy decisions
• Experience working with external vendors or outsourced application teams
• Able to lead technical discussions, challenge weak approaches, and make practical decisions
• Financial services experience required; securities, brokerage, or capital markets technology strongly preferred, especially in operationally sensitive, front-to-back trading environments
